If you spend steampoints in both the Engine and the Steam Gun, you can both grind and fire the Steamgun. The gun has its uses, as it has a 360 degree arc of fire. More importantly, you can use it as a CC weapon, and its wounds count towards combat resolution.

So, say a unit of 5 Harpies try to railroad the Stank. It can simply turn it's Steam Gun and fry as many as possible. So as long as that Steam Gun can wound whatever is sitting right beside it, there really is no way a railroad should work, correct? I watched a great many BatReps where someone had their Stank simply taken out of the game because they sat some little unit (like Harpies) next to it and prevented it from pivoting. I always wondered why they didn't simply use the Steam Gun. Thought I might be missing something obvious. And I suppose the Engineer could've shot his Repeater Pistol as well.

Yes, the Steam Tank and the Engineer could fire at the Harpies. Railroading should not work in any case. For one, the 1" rule "is purely for clarity" - this is as much part of the rule as anything else. Secondly, the Random Movement rules do not contain that provision regarding enemy units. So, you do have some leeway when pivoting. As a last resort, Random Movers that must move (unlike the Steam Tank) have the option of a failed charge against the block, and thus can stay put.

One final note that has worked well for me is just a unit of Chaos warriors with great weapons. These are good for 3'ish wounds per round of combat against the Stank so if you get the charge you've generally killed the thing while only taking a single round of grinding.

Plus S&S from the Repeater Pistol and a Steam Gun shot. As ultima ratio, one can always aim to turn the Tank into an SVBIED.

Oh, and not to forget, the single S3 attack by the Engineer each round of combat!!!

That engineer is so nearsighted he could not hit an Ogre with both pistols!
Also I had weird results with White Lions against the Stank. The first time we used them, they chopped it up into little pieces in one go. In the second game, the Stank just ran through them, with bits of Elves flying everywhere. Weird.

Cast Birona's on the Stank and the Engineer will even have 2 attacks with ASF!
