I thank you all for your insights especially Strutsagget pointing out that I am asking the addicts if I should buy more crack. Maybe I was just looking for vindication on my purchases (You have no idea the weird looks I get when I say I have spent like $1,200 on Warhammer over my life) As far as copyright goes, and phasing out of old models. I hadn't considered that, I will probably get some Imperial Wizards, and a Steam Tank as neither of those really fit the Free Peoples look that they are going for these days. Also in all the name changes I have seen in 40k, I gotta say the only good one is probably Questor Imperialus instead of Imperial Knights, because it fits their over the top lore. I also gotta say buying second hand is kinda my thing, I have collected like 4 of my armies at over 70% off by buying second hand like that.

If you have spent $1200 on warhammer over your life you haven't spent that much.
For me I can use almost anything I bought from GW the year I got started (1990!) today. There is literally almost nothing else in my life except my college education and books that I bought back then that I still even have much less can use just as well as the day I bought it.
I did a quick google search for skiing a popular pass time locally $1200 gets you boots/ski's/bindings and a single day pass - more if you ski more then once a season. All the hardware likely to be replaced in 5 years. Video games - $500-1000 for a PC and then X per title. All likely replaced in less then 5 years. Boat ownership (also popular around here) don't get me started but I have a buddy who was paying $1000-2000 a year just for a slip to park his boat in 15 years ago much less anything else involved in the boat.
Now if you are getting into and out of various miniature games over and over (I had a fling with X Wing that cost me around $300) it's lost money.

Lol, those are some good, perspective insights, there gjnoronh!
Shoot. I've never tallied up the math, but I KNOW I've spent over $1200 on Warhammer each year that I've been playing the game! I'm sure I could've bought a brand new car with all of the money I've spent on Warhammer in the last decade. (And I only play 8th edition...so figure that up!)
In my opinion, though, I'm investing in my happiness. It keeps me busy, produces something tangible (and as gjnoronh says, lasts a LONG time) and prevents me from doing other things I probably shouldn't do! My wife appreciates knowing where I am and what I'm working on, and will join me for "Hobby Time" so it's time we're both together and working on something that makes us happy. That's worth the price tag in my opinion.

Yeah in my single days it wasn't that hard to run up a $50-$100 a night weekend bill ($5 drinks, $20 admission to a club, $10 taxi, $10-20 late night eats) 1-2 nights a week x 4 weeks easy $300 a month. Golf also popular amongst guys my (middle) age local cheap public course www.ravenwoodgolf.com/golf/fees$25-45 per game Starter golf clubs $200-300 Balls/tees $50 Shoes $50 Various other golf clothing etc easily $50-100 Again you are looking at around $500 to get started - and if you only play once. If you play more easily looking at $1000 for your first year and it's very likely you are going to be buy lots of stuff (A single high quality golf club goes from $100-2500!) Warhammer is a cheap hobby comparatively. Even with me spending a lot on running Da Boyz I'm spending no where near what I would for most hobbies of my colleagues.

EXACTLY! I think people just look at the sheer volume of minis, terrain, etc. and think that we spend a LOT more than other people's hobbies. That just simply isn't the case (most of the time). Other hobbies just don't have an additive value and most are spent on a momentary pleasure. Warhammer stays with you!

I went through an expensive phase buying all the models for my Chaos Dwarfs (probably one of the most expensive armies to buy) and I probably dropped around £400 all in all. Painting all those is going to take me probably a good 2-3 years so I don't think it is an excessively expensive hobby. Maybe if you buy models only direct from GW it gets more expensive but I guess it depends on how quickly you paint or if you are happy to just stack up and build/play with unpainted plastic or not.
I don't think I've bought any models for the best part of a year whilst I chew into my backlog a little

Best decision I ever made was not getting rid of any of my old mini’s and WD’s, even with my 10 year hiatus. It allowed me to just pick up where I left off. A lot of my mates seem to love fishing and the amount of crap they have is obscene, let alone the cost of the fishing holidays they go on.

Right now I keep to a budget of $150 a month for my hobby. So that's roughly 1800 a year I spend on models, terrain, paints, and other things hobby related. It's actually a little more as there are some months that I go over.
I don't really regret any of it though. Even those forays into other game systems that I've tried.
Back in my single days I was easily spending that kind of money in a week though on models. Over the years I've easily dropped 30 grand into this hobby.
I used to have a lot more fantasy armies than I currently do and I regret getting rid of them (high elves, FW Chaos Dwarves, Orcs and Goblins, Vampire COunts), but I don't regret getting rid of all my 40k stuff. I DO NOT like that game nor the hyper competitive mindset that the game inspires in the people around here where I live. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life.

to echo was others have said, longevity is key. if you stick with it, warhammer is a really cheap hobby. I am still using models I bought in the early 90s. Can't say that about much else from that time.
