A battle approaches on UB2 as Vampire Counts led by a Necromancer fight Warriors of Chaos tonight.
Vampire List
General Master Necromancer Lore of Vampires, lvl4 - Master of the Dead Black Periapt + Talisman of Preservation
Heroes Cairn Wraith (not sure where to put him) Wight King - Armour of Destiny, GW, spectral steed. Necromancer - Dispel Scoll, lvl2 of Vampires.
Core 3x 5 Dire Wolves 30x Skeleton Warriors FC 30x Skeleton Warriors FC 20x Zombies 20x Zombies
Special 7x Black Knights w/ lances FC 1x Corpse Cart w/unholy lodestone 5x Hexwraiths 30x Grave Guard w/Great Weapons, FC, banner of the barrows 2x Spirit Host
Rare 1x Mortis Engine
Goal with the army is slow death. With the blocks of skeleton and zombies that hopefully will be coming back constantly, the mortis engine draining and the Corse Cart buffing/helping bring more dead back. 2 heavy hitters of course are Grave Guard and Black Knights. I thought about including a black coach, too potentially?
Should I move banner of the barrows to black knights? Does the Cairn Wraith go with the Grave Guard, or one of the skeletons for some damage?

I say keep the banner on the grave guard, maybe add some more of them too and horde them?

I second keeping the banner on the Grave Guards and hoarding them.

I would ditch the knights. They look great on paper, but like all cav in 8th they are super hard to get working. Buy more hex wraiths or ghosts with the recovered points.

Well, my first VC battle took place last night and it was defeat not against Chaos, but an all-cavalry Empire list. I'm cool with it though, as I'm learning how the army works and how to best use my spells. I'll provide some thoughts on the units below for feedback.
Master Necromancer Lore of Vampires, lvl4 - Master of the Dead Black Periapt + Talisman of Preservation
-Spells went off great. Only used the Periapt once though.
Heroes Cairn Wraith (not sure where to put him) -- Did damage in a unit of skeletons, which made a difference. The ranks of the skeletons + the damage of the cairn wraith beat a unit of Empire knights. Wight King - Armour of Destiny, GW, spectral steed. - Did okay, but I misplayed the Black Knights, so.. Necromancer - Dispel Scoll, lvl2 of Vampires. - Did okay.
Core 3x 5 Dire Wolves 30x Skeleton Warriors FC 30x Skeleton Warriors FC 20x Zombies 20x Zombies
All did as expected. One Skeleton unit didnt see any combat.
Special 7x Black Knights w/ lances FC - I misplayed the black knights as they beat a unit of Reiksgard, but instead of fleeing off the table as they should have, I left them standing there to take a demi and archlector on altar charge to the face. Big mistake. 1x Corpse Cart w/unholy lodestone --- mmmm.. Didn't do a whole lot. My invocation re-rolls didnt get very lucky. 5x Hexwraiths - These guys are interesting. They did some work, but I was a bit scared of using them, fearing a charge. I should have been more aggressive though. They took are of a unit of Reiksguard with the black knights. 30x Grave Guard w/Great Weapons, FC, banner of the barrows -- Obliterated some empire kngihts, and then got themselves obliterated by a unit of 8 inner circle + 2 warriors priests on the charge. 2x Spirit Host - Held up demis and empire knights all game. Win.
Rare 1x Mortis Engine - Forgot once the aura, but otherwise was underwhelming. Got charged and combat resoluted to death (a rear)
--
At the end of the game, my black knights & Grave Guard were dead (again), and I took out 2 units of Empire Knights and Reiksguard. But I didn't have much to take care of his Demis and big surviving unit of Inner Circle.

Sounded fun. Good to get the feedback on the mortis. Did you take the upgrade to add +2 to your casting and do you think it would work better in a list where it would boost regen (ghouls etc)?
I love that your opponent ran all Cav.

thanks for the post-game notes. seems to me this was a pretty cage-y match where both sides were holding back. Do you think that's an issue with your list? too much slow stuff and so the other guy with ~only cav can just pick off enough points from you and then disengage and coast to a win?
How did you set up your five blocks of infantry? any impassable terrain in/near the deployment zone must be an issue?
I am working on hobbying up a similar list so this is a great thread!

I love that your opponent ran all Cav. Didn't get the +2 upgrade this time around, no. It definitely might work better with ghouls, etc. I just prefer the skeleton/zombie route of unending death.

I think we got a feeling for each others list the 1st 2 turns maybe? Like I said, this was the first game for me with VC, so I was learning the army. He was heavy cavalry based, not avoidance, so he sot of charged straight into my units. The Grave Guard held the middle, with the skeletons and zombies to their sides.

That’s how I’ve always liked to run them too. I find it much more thematic.

Over the weekend, the battle between a similar list and Warriors of Chaos took place. His list was roughly 3-4 ranks of Warriors of Nurgle, 3 ranks of Chosen of Khorne, 3 juggernaut of khorne, deamon prince, khorne chariot + chaff.
This battle started going a bit better for me as I started getting used to VC, the spells, etc. Of course I made a few mistakes here and there, but the main takeaway is that I took the lead in the first few turns taking care of the chariot and the chaff, but had little to deal with his heavy hitters. Skeleton wrriors + hexwraiths (flank) charged the warriors and bounced right off. Expected mind you, but again, nothing that I had was hard hitting enough for some of the games best units. His deamon prince took out the mortis engine and corpse cart. Bad positioning on my part left the black coach open to a charge and it got taken out too.
And then all of a sudden, my grave guard needed to take on his entire army almost.
Now granted - His list is super strong (Deamon prince, chosen, nurgle, etc) while I purposely left a blender lord at home, and went with a necromancer / skeleton build. So we must keep it mind expectations, right?
More tweaking to be done though!
