More than just a specific rule proposal, armybook, etc, I imagine this thread could serve as a general "wishlist" master-list, less as a means to buff any individual army to uber-meta murderness, but more to round out armies and allow for options that make sense lorewise but aren't quite represented in the rules. This is a pretty "high-level" thread, and as people suggest stuff, I'll add links to assorted articles too.

Couple off the top of my head:
Dwarves - Stone Golems Beastmen - not a variation but perhaps just a recosting of the monsters and Minotaurs
With regards to the Empire Steam tank variants, there was a WD article that had these in many moons ago. From memory, it included a hellblaster and open top variant (perhaps with a warwagon + crew mounted on it)

It could take a hull upgrade (cannon, hellblaster), and a "top" upgrade (steam turret, war wagon platform), or take mortar & 2 swivel guns which would preclude turret options. Since then, there have been the assorted Empire updates, and there *is* a certain charm in the idea of strapping a Helstorm Rocket Launcher to said Steam Tank as a steampunk Katyusha. Alternately, allowing a Master Engineer (whom really should be BS 5 for extra points, or should have a cheaper Long Rifle) to pilot said Steam Tank would open up interesting options, especially combined with magic item access.

I remember the Steam Tank article- it was from sixth ed. Such is my memory from events of that time I even remember what some of them were called. The conquerer Steam Tank was the classic one, with cannon and steam gun. The Old Reliable replaced the cannon with a hellblaster; the Von Zeppell had a fighting platform with the six classic war wagon crew. Then were was one which had no weapons and could just ram things whose name escapses me. Then there was also one with a Mortar and the top removed, whose name similarly escapes me.
It was quite cool- thje more weapons and cool stuff you added the more flimsy the tank became, and the more expensive.

I remembered the names correctly- I am quite impressed with this feat (utterly pointless though this is) of memory.
This sort of thing was generally quite out of character with 6th ed really- lots of complexity and customisation was really the thing they were trying to get away from at that time, but the Steam Tank was an exception.

Granted, it was also a time known for kooky variant lists, such as Pirates of the Vampire Coast, Hell Pit Skaven, Southlands Lizardmen, etc. Mat Ward even had a White Dwarf article on how to create your own Knightly Order (pick one advantage and one disadvantage), which led to the amusing prospect of Pistol Knights.
