So, I realize many people don't like to use named characters for various reasons, but occasionally, I like to break the mold and include one in my lists. Who are some of your favorites? What do you like about them? Is it the game play, fluff, look or all of the above?
Some of my favorites are: Ludwig Schwartzhelm - He was the first named character I ever owned and I've always been fascinated with him ever since. He can also come out as a surprise to your opponent when they aren't really expecting it.
Joseph Bugman - The ultimate "YE SPILLED ME BEER!!!" bar-room brawler. He comes and goes in a clowdy, beer-goggles, confused vision. And what's better than a beer that can heal wounds! Give me some of that!
Korhil - The badass among elf badasses. This guy just looks so cool. I want him to be so much better than he is in game, but break the fluff mold and stick him in a unit of Phoenix Guard for some nicely aged cheese. Stubborn PG with a leader capable of killing most anything? Dang.

I personally love the look, and lore behind Ikit Claw, and hope I will be able to field him in a list sometimes. The fact he created a thermonuclear weapon in a world largely set in the pike and shot era just tickles me so much, and the look of his power armour stands out on the battlefield so well.

I play named characters if I feel like it. I don't see why not, they are generally overcosted for what they are. I only own the ones I like. Thorgrim - he is so expensive he rarely gets used, but he is the king badass Dwarf so what's not to like? Ungrim - excellent character, excellent in game too. Bugman - not painted yet but a nice option and relatively affordable Skarsnik - my favourite O&G character. I always loved that he is the sneakiest of the goblins and keeps a massive squig as a pet. I love the 8 peaks fluff. The new model is totally awesome too, I only have the old one but will probably get the newer one at some point as a painting project. Kemmler & Krell - Again the backstory is excellent and the models exceptional. Aekhold Hellbrass - I keep repeating this.. he needs some rules for 8th. Egrimm - back in the day Egrimm on Baudros was almost as badass as it got. Needs 8th rules. I do like others which I don't own, particularly Throgg, Sigvald, Vlad, Ludwig Schwarzhelm, Ikit Claw & Azhag to name a few. Some for models, some for fluff. I am generally not too bothered by their in-game performance

I don't tend to bring special characters very much as I like creating my own fluff and continuing narrative for my lists. Or it might also be a throwback to playing a lot of the herohammer editions (and taking op things like Nagash). That said if I do bring them it is normally so I can try a different kind of 'fluff' list. The one exception to this is Grimm burlock who is used just for his abilities.
Vlad - the original and still my favourite vampire. His plot around wanting to become a recognised elector count was probably one of the shining lights of the end of times.
Ungrim - love the fluff, plays well and gives me an excuse to bring a heavily themed slayer list.
Morglum Necksnapper - ok it was a 4th ed OnG special char but was the original badass black Orc. (I also loved using Grom and Skarsnick in 4/5th).
Orion - the guy will fall to pieces if a cannon so much looks at him but I love the idea of him. He's almost the ultimate WE glass cannon. It's a shame they never updated Ariel's rules to field beside him in this ed.

Valkia the Bloody has been one of my favorites for Warriors. I made a conversion (Based on the Dark Eldar character Lillith Hesperax) before GW released their figure for it and she was a lot of fun. Flying infantry model with effectively a lance quite cool.
Admittedly though I think I only fielded her in 7th maybe not at all in 8th.

Named Warhammer Fantasy characters are among the crucial reasons we still insist playing the WF battle game from 8th to 1st edition and not moving anywhere. I salute anyone who pick on special (or named) characters to fight against me, no matter how massively uber they are. As a DoW player, I usually have like 5 to 10 named characters at any game anyway My favorites: Rodrigo Delmonte, captain of the Alcatani Fellowship: Probably the only good and decent fella (who actually cares for the downtrodden peasants) in the whole of Tilea and the Warhammer world. Pity his unit sucks real bad! Maximilian Damark, captain of the Marksmen of Miragliano, the most deadly shot of the whole Mankind! Ragged Ricco, captain of the most awesome unit Geedub have ever sculpted, the Republican Guards. Luka Braganza, captain of the Besieger, the only man sensible enough to slap loads of armor on his crossbowmen. Mengil Manhide, boss of the Manflayers, whose sadism scares and revolts even his own most vicious people. Teclis and Tyrion: There are few better tales about a twin in Fantasy literature. Asarnil the Dragonlord: A merc of the highest order, with the fluff writen by a child. But I like him (especially with many enjoyable memories of watching people cry during a 1000 pts tournaments in 6th edition )

I don't have a clue as to who these guys are (except for Teclis and Tyrion, of course - kinda hard not to know those brothers). I LOVE that I can be so immersed in this game, for such a long time, and still not know who everyone is!

Some named characters that I find awesome:
Lizardmen: Teto’eko Probably one of the best costed named characters. I feel his points cost is perfect for what he does and I have regularly used him in my skink cloud list. Auto include vs dwarf gunline purely for comet of casandora
Gor-rok Unfortunately haven’t tried this beast yet but his fluff is really cool. He can kill a chariot before he lifts a finger 😂
Lord Kroak Cool fluff and pretty fun to play with. I think he even stopped time once 😳
Dark elves: Tularis I always use this crazy mofo when I play executioners. He makes the unit shine.
Hellebron Nuff said.
Vampire counts Mannfred Fun to play with having so many spells. Auto include vs Ogres for me because of purple sun.
Konrad 🤣 Just too funny not to play. He is definitely the craziest character in warhammer. Literally. IIRC he killed his mother because she didn’t ask him permission to give birth to him.

Gor-Rok is a TANK. Not impossible to break, but throw him at a unit you really want to tie up for a round or two. I love that guy. He narrowly missed my list! On top of his phenomenal defense, he also has a crushing attack.
How do you run Hellebron? I ask because I just bought 30 Witch Elves and a Cauldron set. I'm debating how to use her or if I should just stick with a Hag.
I think Marius Leitdrof might give Konrad a run for his money in the crazy department. He relies on advice from his warhorse, Daisy, regarding matters of war, and he once accused Kurt Helborg of having a "poor moustache"! If that ain't crazy, I don't know what is!

I don’t put her on the cauldron because there will be too many models that can hit back though it is good to run her in a block of witches with the cauldron as she provides an answer to armour. I think she still gets a ward save from the cauldron even if she isn’t on it but still in the same unit. She hits so hard 🤣 but stay away from vampire lords... a nightshroud in base to base means death for her. Marius does sound entirely bonkers. Luckily all the best people (and vampires) are mad.

Hellebron's prime use is to give Witches a small anti-armor capability. 7-10 S10 poison attacks will save the unit when faced with high armor saves.
I like to pair Tullaris up with a brewhag in an Executioner unit. You have to bring enough chaff to win the maneuver battle to make it work, but Executioners that have as many attacks as bog-standard Witches is pretty devastating to nearly ANYTHING.

Yeah, I don't have any Executioner's yet, but eventually.

Yeah, I don't have any Executioner's yet, but eventually. A nice, cheap conversion is to use IoB Swordmasters and replace the sword blades with something more Druchii. I've uses the 'clipped' spearheads from the old DE Spearman set to good effect.
