Hopefully that is changing for them though. I don't want to see GW go out of business (and I think that it would take a LOT to get them to that point). I think that their current CEO (Roundtree) will get them back on track. It seems as though they are making great strides in the right direction.

Lost my post. Wonβt try to reconstruct. But come on man remind me where there was a shaman riding a Giant spider in the Tolkien novels. Though of course GW does have license literally to create things from the Tolkien IP for their LOTR game Shelob is not a reasonable facsimile of a forest goblin shaman on giant spider.

You honestly think they should have copyright to be the only one allowed to do a huge spider (copied from folklore) and goblin (copied from folklore)? That's just absurd π don't even get me started on the chaos gods, copied right of Lovecraft. Don't get me wrong I love it and endorse it just absurd calling it copyright and IP. But I don't really care if someone actually calls IP. As it's a bad business model from the beginning. A western product company can't ever be about price but have to be about customer satisfaction or make sure you are the cheapest. Think they will get sued over 40k too as they don't own that either but probably (I am guessing) copied it too π just the other company went out of business when GW copied... Not sure how it went through. spikeybits.com/2017/08/games-workshop-is-being-sued-for-62-5m.html

I, of course, think the lawsuit against GW is absurd. Just show how absurd it is from the beginning calling IP when you have copied/based a lot from folklore and other writers.

I'm about as far from a GW apologist as one can get, but I'm not really seeing the Lovecraft influence in chaos.
I guess the idea of elder gods but the look of the chaos gods doesn't remind me of much from Lovecraft

Hey man we are going to have to agree to disagree. I think unique IP exists and creative artists and companies have a right to defend it.

Hey man we are going to have to agree to disagree. I think unique IP exists and creative artists and companies have a right to defend it. Of course they do. Just its a lousy business model and laws are made up and different in different part of the world. roughtimes I would say mainly the big picture with strange looking evil gods from other time/space showing up destroying everything. But with the number of gods, Lovecraft created you can probably find a lot of parts to Tzeentch, Slaanesh, Khorne, and Nurgle. But I should probably call it influences and not copy

I can see some influence but the chaos gods really don't have that Lovecraft vibe to me.
I suppose there's some Cthulhu in the look of nurgle but I can't come up with any other good analogies for the other chaos demons.

Pretty sure the old citadel eternal champions minis were based on his writing. Awesome models by the way. I've read everything Lovecraft has written (even the awful stuff) and I never saw a connection with WFB chaos. Lovecraft is borrowed from quite often but not in this case. But you couldn't really blame gw if they had. Lovecraft was pretty open about other writers using the mythos he created.

Yes, GW made a role playing game on Elric. I've read all of Moorcock's Elric saga, and his descriptions of Chaos seem to be used almost unaltered by GW.

I agree that unique IP exists and can be defended but I see the Giant spider art and eventual model release to be different enough from the Aracknarock that I'm fine with it... I'd gladly own both models and think they would look great... and different side by side. Recasts however are a clear IP infringement and I'm all for Games Workshop going after recasts. ...but where do you draw the line...what is 'inspired' and what is a copy? I don't think the spider crosses that line... it's art and model is clearly inspired by Games Workshop but different enough that I think it's a worthy 'unique' model. To further illustrate my point... when I saw the new Games Workshop Malign portents undead guy (picture one) I immediately thought...hey.....Games Workshop is copying Mierce Miniatures. It certainly seems to draw 'inspiration' from their spectre releases and be closer to them in design than it is to actual Games Workshop models (albeit with a GW twist, in the same way as I see the NonAracknarok as having its own unique twist) The Games Workshop miniature even has the same style of having a visible sheath and hourglass dangling, just like the Mierce Miniatures art. I see the upcoming GW miniature as being about as similar to the Mierce miniatures as the spiders are to each other.... similar but different enough for them to both be cool minis that I'd like to see on a table. Just my 6c.
