I like the Bone Dragon. Took me a bit to warm to it, but the more I look at it, the more used to the idea of it I become. It's definitely something we haven't seen before, and new is often scary (especially when we're talking about our beloved hobby) but I can see this having it's place among the Tomb Kings. I'll probably be getting one.
The part I don't care for is the king himself. He feels rushed. Like an afterthought ornament for the dragon. I like his stance and even his spear, but the flail just feels too big. The scale seems off. I'll be better able to tell once I have it in hand. I'm betting it will have unique, handy abilities though. The biggest thing I don't like though, is how smooth his features are. No sunken cheeks or eye sockets, no ribs poking out, heck, he even has a six pack and muscular thighs! One hole on his abdomen and no scarabs crawling in and over his empty shell of a body. No, this guy looks like he just died yesterday. Not what I want a Tomb King to look like.

-------Ushoran is a WFB character! He's one of the first WFB vampires and the first Strigoi Ghoul King! Great model, but he should be for TOW!

Not a fan of the bone dragon. It doesn't fit with the TK (Egyptian) aesthetics. It should have been a Khemric Titan! Reminder that Tomb Kings had a Bone Dragon in Warmaster.

We have a reason for this. The Howdah and riders were sculpted by one sculptor while the rest of the dragon was done by two others, all of them doing their separate parts as intern parts.
So this actually was a case of three separate sculpts being conglomerated into a whole after the fact.

Even so, if you look at other Tomb King models, even non-GW models, they don't look quite so "alive". Why haven't his muscles wasted away? Why aren't his cheeks sunken and wrinkly? Where's the Mummy part of the model?

Where's the Mummy part of the model? It could be that this is supposed to be a 'younger' tomb king as this is effectively a prequel game. I'm hoping there is an alternative tomb king head in the kit. My favourite head is actually the sphinx head in the priest howdah.

Then it didn't fit in there either! I just don't see why every race needs a dragon. I think such a thing fits better with the VC. There are so many other model concepts that would have better complimented the TK range than an out of place dragon.

I think it's perfectly feasible that the ancient kings raised/enslaved dragons to do their bidding. They were probably much more common during their lifetime. VC feels more like the abominations race to me. Things that shouldn't exist. And Chaos factions are the demons. Those factions don't deserve dragons. Leave the Dark Elves to twisting noble dragons into tormented souls.

Leave the Dark Elves to twisting noble dragons into tormented souls. To each their own I suppose. I don't really care that much about the fluff reasons, because an author can justify any race getting a dragon. I'm more concerned about the aesthetic misalignment. What I love most about the Tomb Kings is their ancient Egyptian motif. In that regard, a dragon simply feels out of place. If we look at the Tomb Kings 8th edition update, everything new fit with the general theme of the army. Snakes, scorpions, giant Egyptian states, cats/sphinxes, etc. are all fair game. A dragon, even an undead one, simply does not fit.

Apep/Apophis as well as a number of other Egyptian beings are described by the Greeks as Dragons(which the Greek word for translates directly as "Great Serpent"), so it's not an unheard of thing in Egypt.

Warmaster was released at the time when GW had less imagination for Tomb Kings in the 6th Edition era and simply gave them bone constructs, which should have made it a prime target for TOW to just retcon the Bone Dragon and replace it with a Khemric Titan or something more aesthetically fitting (as 8th did in the spiritual sense by replacing the Bone Giant unit with the superior Necrolith Colossus name and background). Apep/Apophis as well as a number of other Egyptian beings are described by the Greeks as Dragons(which the Greek word for translates directly as "Great Serpent"), so it's not an unheard of thing in Egypt. But because those beings were great serpents rather than the winged, fire-breathing dragon archetype represented by the Bone Dragon (which more arose in Europe during the Dark Ages and Medieval eras), it would have fitted better for the mount to be a giant version of the snake statues ridden by the Necropolis Knights.

Do a quick Google Image search for Apep/Apophis and see what imagery you get. Looks much more like a giant snake motif (fulfilling the "Great Serpent" descriptor), which aesthetically speaking, would fit much better into a TK army than a dragon.

If it were up to me, I'd still rather not see dragons in a TK army. Especially when there are so many more better options available out there.
