Forget yet more Marauder sculpts (though I admit the shaman model is particularly unusual and could work as a Beast(wo)man), the Gnomes are here! I honestly never thought they would do this, but for the first time since 3rd Edition Fantasy, GW have made Gnome models (true, it's a Blood Bowl team, but look at Snotlings, their Blood Bowl team makes a great Snotling swarm builder kit). I didn't know you were such a Gnome fan.

I didn't know you were such a Gnome fan. Certainly I've been a fan of the Warhammer concept of them ever since I picked up a second-hand copy of the 3rd Edition rulebook a long way back, and noticed them as one of the playable races (before 4th Edition ditched them along with many other faded ideas to start anew with a much smaller range of more clearly-delineated factions). Probably partly because their history of existence in Warhammer is a bit of an oddity - being an obscure but present race up to 3rd Edition before being booted out, then returning as part of Warhammer Fantasy roleplay but never quite making it into a proper GW game again (until now). Their WFRP lore is pretty interesting too - unlike their larger cousins the Dwarfs (which they get really annoyed at being mistaken for), they are innately tied to magic, specifically the Wind of Ulgu, and they're renowned for being masters of illusory Shadow magic (almost an in-lore explanation as to why they've always been lingering at the boundaries of GW games - they've always been there, you just can't see them ). They also play on a lot of 'little people' legends, being crafty, tricksy, potentially benign if you earn their trust but also little troublemakers if you cross them. I also like their association with woodland animals, something they more have in common with Wood Elves than their Dwarf cousins. They have their own Warhammer Fantasy wiki page here which is worth a read: warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/GnomesI just think it's a particularly nice touch that GW have dug out a particularly forgotten race in this way, for a fun cameo if nothing else. I honestly never thought they would delve so deeply into Warhammer's past, especially for something so comparatively casual as Blood Bowl.

The fact that GW dug so deep into Warhammer's past for the Gnome Blood Bowl team has me worried for Blood Bowl's future. Don't get me wrong. I'll be picking up a Gnomes team. But GW is obviously struggling to come up with new team ideas. What they should do is start making a second sprues for each team. Right now each team box has two identical sprues. Adding a new sprue for each team would take years and give existing players something to buy.

I feel like making a Blood Bowl team for these “forgotten” or wayside factions is a great idea, sort of like the old Imperial factions being present in Kill Team with new models after no releases for 20-30 years. It is an opportunity to create new sculpts in a self contained way, where there is no pressure for GW to make a full fledged Gnome army in a game (as GW has not made lone models without rules in quite some time.) Sure, you could always make more releases for pre-existing factions, but why do that when each “full” fantasy army already has a team and some star players? I feel that it is more creative to add Amazons, Chorfs, Hobbits, Gnomes, etc rather than just be like “Ok here’s more Dark Elves, maybe referencing a different unit this time.” Just my take :-)

Like I said above I'll be buying a Gnome team. But is it financially viable for GW? The non-recurring expense to design and tool a plastic sprue is basically a fixed cost. I have to imagine a sprue of Dark Elves drives more sales than a sprue of Gnomes. I want Blood Bowl to continue. I'm worried Gnomes or another niche team selling poorly will cause GW to pack it in.

Bretonnians and Tomb Kings anybody?

Various bits up for pre-order next weekend: www.warhammer-community.com/2024/03/03/sunday-preview-the-dawnbringers-crusade-continues-as-the-croneseer-circles-above/"Saviours of Cinderfall" - the Witch Hunter with the beard would be great for WFB, and the thief is cool too. The guy in the bottom left would make a good mercenary captain for a Border Princes themed list. Dark Elf box with the new blind crow character: Cities of Sigmar box: Ghouls box: Three bits of Warcry terrain available "as separate releases" (not sure if that means separate from a Warcry box set, or separate from each other): And this Ogre Kingdoms mawpit/juvenile Sarlacc will be available separately:

I'm glad they've finally given "Darkoath" a proper range. They've had some really cool minis here and there over the last few years, but never proper units. I am definitely getting some of them to give myself a proper Chaos Marauder force. The old Marauder Horsemen are still cool, but the infantry long due a replacement kit.
The spawn I'm not so keen on.

I'm probably the opposite in that the Wilderfiend is the one model I particularly like... but then that's probably because he would look great as an alternative Razorgor for Beastmen.

And you forgot to include this chad: Another fun sculpt, and though I don't play Blood Bowl I can see how he'd become an utter troll in that game.
