And from the OnG book, Gorbad Ironclaw is also both the BSB and General.

I’ll also add that RAW or not, it’s generally accepted that your general can have a lower leadership if the higher leadership character is the BSB.

I can't imagine why anyone would try to dispute that - it certainly doesn't give you an advantage!

It allows several armies to field a Wizard general and BSB instead of either a wizard and no BSB (because the BSB options have higher leadership than the wizard options) or a combat lord general, a BSB, and a wizard.

I can't imagine why anyone would try to dispute that - it certainly doesn't give you an advantage! The rules specifically states the general has to have the highest leadership on the field with no exception added. Matt Ward without any rulebook at hand or read in years gave a Twitter response saying you omit characters that can’t be general as a bsb or other rule when selecting general.

Yeah this was something that was changed for the Skaven from 6th to 7th edition as the Grey Seer was only Ld 6 which was the same as a chieftain, by making a Grey seer Ld7 that took out some of the ambiguity.

Dark Elves at low points would want a Master BSB (Ld8) and a L2 Sorceress (Ld7) for the general instead of a second Master. Bretonnia might have the same issue, although they're more likely to bite the bullet and take the second Paladin.

What you say is in no way as straight forward as you make out. It was debated at length here eefl.freeforums.net/thread/715/rules-question-generals-leadership?page=6Suffice to say I disagree with your assessment. As does the dude who wrote it, but maybe other people know better than him since he hasn't read it in years 🤷♂️

Sorry, late to the party, but where does it say the BSB cannot be the general? The second section in BRB about bsb: “The Battle Standard Bearer Model A Battle Standard Bearer is a heroic model carrying a particularly impressive banner, and it will be presented as an option in your Warhammer army book. The battle standard is carried by a character model and, unless specified otherwise, the model that carries the battle standard cannot be the General.” Excerpt From WARHAMMER RULEBOOK Thx!

I really like some of his work with 6ed wood elves book, a personal favorite. He is not listed as an author of the main BRB as far as I can google. WFB.lexicanum.com/wiki/Warhammer_Rulebook_(8th_Edition)Maybe it just me but I try to read the rules book when interpreting rules. I find it important. 🤷♂️

No need to google: the colophon on p. 512 mentions for Games Development: Alessio Cavatore, Robin Cruddace, Graham Davey, Andy Hoare, Jervis Johnson, Phil Kelly, Andrew Kenrick, Jeremy Vetock, and...Matthew Ward.

Interpret is the key word. Your post is incorrect as has been pointed out. If you wish to assume you know better than one of the authors because it suits your side, so be it

To be fair: it IS what is clearly written in the BRB, and if the intent was completely different, then the writer is to blame. Besides, Mat Ward himself admitted in the thread he did not look at the rules (and thus may have been confusing editions), and seems to be under the wrongful impression that somebody was arguing that the BSB could be general (something I often encountered often in such discussions): "Cant lay my hands on the rules atm, but the intent was always that the BSB can never be the general" - which, of course, was never in doubt.
