Well it's been a while but I'm still at work painting away. Last month I got enough of my Beastmen finished to have them table ready. They took a little longer than expected and pretty much took up the majority of my painting time for January, February, and March, but it was worth it. I hope my Goblin Green bases don't offend anyone but I decided after painting Vampire Counts and all those zombies that anymore horde armies get simple bases. I don't want to spend more time on the bases than I do the models. Also as a plus it let's men use some stuff from my troll army these guys.
Group shot
Leading the Beastmen is Khazrak the One Eye. His whip broke while I was trying to manipulate it so I replaced it with one from an orc chariot. I also curved the horns a little to make them more ram like. The guy on the right a a trusty wargor. I love this classic model. For him I also curved the horns and carved out the weird plume on top of his head. I also extended his axe handle a bit.
Gotta have a BSB! I'm not much of a free hand painter but I was pleased that I could draw a circle as well as some primitive goat men.
Another wargor for when I need hand weapon and shield.
Beastmen need magic. My level 4 is usually this modified Morghur model. I love the model but don't plan on using him as Morghur much. I can't take credit for the conversion I got the idea from someone on YouTube. I did paint mine more like vines instead of demon tentacles. I think it really helps him stand out being up on his creepy vines.
This shame is converted from an old Chaos sorcerer. I just gave him a Beastmen head and added the back banner.
Here is another shaman. Just a simple weapon swap for him. The ax he originally had just didn't fit and I like the sacrificial dagger look. I think that dagger is from an old Chaos warrior sprue. To the right is my Herdstone. I couldn't bring myself to pay $30+ for what what is essentially a 50pt magic item. It fits the bill and gave me an opportunity to use this goblin hut that has been rolling around the bits bin for years.
Some Ungor Raiders. These guys were the test models for the army. After I painted them up I decided to go with a brighter shade for the leather.
I think painting the gor herds took the longest. Two units of 40 took some time. I have about another 30 left but it will be some time before I can bring myself to paint more of them. Even though they were a pain I am quite pleased with how they turned out.
For Chaos Warhounds I decided to use these giant rams from West Wind Miniatures. I think they are perfect for Beastmen. For some reason I really get a kick out of the face on these guys. Look for some more of these to show up in my halfling army.
For some more chaff we have two Tuskgor converted from the newer orc boars. Loads of people use these instead of the actual Tuskgor model. I have one but it looks horrible and is so front heavy that it falls over a lot. These guys fit the bill much better. I think the actual model looks like a demonic version of Pumbaa from the Lion King.
They are overpriced for what they do but man I love the Centigor models. These guys were fun to paint and I will probably add a second unit of them at some point.
Probably my favorite unit in the army is the Bestigor. 50 of them can do the heavy lifting most of the time. I put one of the giant rams in the unit to be a mascot. He also freed up two models so I could have an extra command in case I ever run them as two units of 25. These guys painted up a lot faster than I had thought. Actually having some armour to paint was a nice change from all the fur.
Extra Champion and standard, I forgot about an extra musician so I guys one unit is getting the ram for a musician.
Another of my favorites is the Cygor. Just love this guy. Unless you play the Army Project Rules these guys are way over priced on points but I would still take them even with the 7th ed rule book. I just love the idea of a couple of these guys chucking rocks around while the rest of the army advances.
This Ghorgon was fun to paint but he will probably be used more as a 2nd Cygor. I'm just more partial to the Cygor's rules. I was happy to be able to save this guy without have to repaint him. I put a clear coat on all my models to take down the shine and I guess it was too humid the day I sprayed this guy, he started to turn cloudy. Luckily I was able to use some Agrax Earthshade to get ride of it.
That was going to be it for now on the Beastmen and after 3 months of painting them I was ready to move onto something else. However on the least day of March my son convinced me to paint up some minotaurs. He wanted to see them in our games, I sure watch Kevin Sorbo as Hercules had nothing to do with it.
8 minotaurs with great weapons. I do have to admit when these models first came out I wasn't a fan and I know people are divided on them but I have to admit that after putting them together and painting them I really like them. They look cool all buff, like they are on Beastmen steroids. The Ivan Drago of the Old World.
These guys paint up super fast too. I painted the 8 above and this Gorebull in a day. To make this guys stand out a bit I changed the position of the arms a bit and gave him a double bladed ax. The handle is from an ogre standard bearer. I like how he turned out, has that "come get some" look to him.
It was a lot of work painting all that brown but I am pleased and it's worth it to finally have the bulk of this army painted and ready for the table. I hope you all enjoy, remember keep painting!
