Hello there! Now that I have made myself known to this forum, let's test out these waters! Now that I am on a forum for Warhammer Fantasy, let's talk Round Bases!
Ahem...but seriously. While I had the proper squares back in the day of Fantasy being played (When 8th edition was still in its first year or so), I did like the movement trays and bases and all of that. It was cool....even if a little fiddly. Ranking up was a pain in some cases. But even back then, I had an experiment. I played Orks in 40k, and to double dip a bit (because I am, as always, frugal and eager to experiment to find as many uses as I can). So I played Fantasy Orcs...with 40k Orcs. I HAD some actual Fantasy Orcs, but the ranks were bulked out with 40k Orks. I was going to get around to converting them so that they looked more...neutral, but never got around to it (a common theme in all my projects...)
But the big deal here, of course, was that at the time both Orks and Orcs were on 25mm, both round and square. So, with good movement trays, you didn't notice! These days 40k (and AoS) Orks are on 32mm....and look so much better. But obviously this inflates ranks. Same with AoS basing, all the 20 squares are now 25 rounds. There are even some units that hopped from 20 squares to 32s! Yikes...
But...does this really matter? Like, right now I have blocks of Empire infantry, Swordsman, Handgunners, etc, all on 25mm rounds. If I made them a nice movement tray and kept that spacing consistent in my army, how much would this affect my games? Assuming my opponent does the same (as it almost certainly would for my current playgroup) it seems like no issues. But let's say extreme, if I went against a square based army with smaller frontage, would I have an advantage? A disadvantage? Would the extra bit even matter? It adds up to about one extra guy wider per rank....which seems PRETTY minimal.
As a kind of...example of what could be done, I like this Battle Report just for how the armies are laid out. Hell...I even rather like how the models look with extra spacing, giving more leeway with modeling and feeling like more...I dunno, realistic marching space? Maybe I am just being hopeful.

What is everyone's thoughts? Would you hate to play against it? Would it break the game? Or is this perhaps a great way to have my cake and eat it too?
