With my loft building work nearing completion we managed to get in a battle for the first time in ages and wrap up the first campaign phase. Mr Blank was 2-1 up in CP so we thought for the final game we would play a Storm of Magic battle and give it a go for the first time. Battle 3: Storm of Magic (2500 points +625 SoM points) 2 Campaign Point Horace Tamurkhan’s Chaos Host Mr Blank Dragon Ogres/Chaos Warriors My list:
Sayl the Faithless 325 points Great Unclean One (Greater Gift, Level 4) 530 points Herald of Nurgle (Locus of Fecundity, Level 1) 170 points Exalted Hero (BSB, Mark) 145 points 23 Plaguebearers (Full Command) 329 points 17 Chaos Warriors (Shields, Full Command, Marks) 319 points 3 Plague Drones 165 points 4 Beasts of Nurgle 240 points 4 Chaos Trolls (Additional Hand Weapons) 152 points 3 Nurglings 120 points SoM Scrolls of Binding:
Lamassu (Tail Attack, Level 2) Great Taurus Griffin Great Eagle His list (approx.)
Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount (Slaanesh, Dawnstone) Chaos Sorceror (Level 2, Slaanesh, Lore of Fire) Exalted Hero (Slaanesh, BSB) 36 Marauders (Full Command, Great Weapons, Slaanesh) 5 Chaos Warhounds 10 Forsaken (Slaanesh) 6 Dragon Ogres (Champion, Great Weapons) Dragon Ogre Shaggoth 6 Chaos Ogres (Full Command, Slaanesh, Great Weapons) SoM Daemonic Pact:
Keeper of Secrets (Level 3, Lore of Slaanesh) 15 Daemonettes (Full Command) Having never played Storm of Magic before, I figured going heavy on magic was a sensible idea. My rough plan was to use my GUO to hold a fulcrum since it’s hard as nails and gets a boosted ward and to use Sayl and the other pseudo-casters like the Herald and Lamassu as other magic options. I thought the selection of flying monsters I took could perhaps pressure enemy fulcrums. Shame I couldn’t fit a Chaos Dragon. The scenery was randomized and fulcrums laid out; The Gallows Tree, Arcane Ruins, Sinister Structure thing, and the Statue. I opted for Heavens on Sayl, Death on the GUO, Fire on the Lamassu & Nurgle on the Herald. Sayl took Comet, Curse of the Midnight Wind & Wind Blast GUO got Caress, Fate of Bjuna, Purple Sun & Soulblight Herald rolled Plague Wind Lamassu took Flame Storm and Flaming Sword (useful for healing Taurus?) He rolled Acquiescence, Cacophonic Choir & Phantasmagoria :E The sorcerer took Fireball and Flame Cage. Having never played these scenarios before, deployment was… messy. You can deploy within 6” of friendly fulcrums which makes for some very advanced deployments! I messed up my Plaguebearer placement and left them exposed, requiring me to place my Nurglings early to try and shield them should I not get first turn. I tried to match my Beasts to his Knights and Trolls to his Dragon Ogres since I thought they would be capable of absorbing the damage from these units

My right flank was crippled by the spells as I failed to make both Stupidity tests on Ld 2. The Trolls also failed their stupidity for good measure. The Plaguebearers charged the Ogres in the flank, the Great Taurus charged the fulcrum, and the Lamassu took up position behind the enemy lines. In the magic phase, the Herals again failed to Rotbomb the Knights but did manage to get Nurgle’s Circle of Life through to destroy the Shaggoth, spawning a Great Unclean One! (which we wrongly placed as a Daemon Prince!). Mr Blank managed to dispel Choking Foe and then I realized I had used up my power dice and not dispelled my flank crippling spells! Oh dear. In combat the Daemonettes continued their resurgence against the Plague Drones and managed to win the combat, resulting the Drones evaporating! The Ogres killed the Eagle and the Ogre Champion dispatched the Plaguebearer champion in a challenge. The Plaguebearers managed to do enough damage though that the weight of their flank charge broke the Ogres and they fled, escaping through the stone circle. The Great Taurus finished off the wounded Sorcerer on the fulcrum. The Dragon Ogres charged at the Trolls who decided to flee rather than face the charge. The Knight charged the Daemon Prince who was about to be swapped for a GUO (which kind of gimped Mr Blank , we should have just left it wrong). The Warriors (now under Slaaneshi control) reformed sideways. The remaining Daemonettes moved in front of the Plaguebearers to block their advance. In the magic phase the KoS failed to cast his first spell attempt which broke his concentration. The Great Unclean One then dispelled Slothful Stupor and Song of Seduction. The Griffin charged the Marauders in the flank. The Plaguebearers charged the remaining Daemonettes. The Lamassu took up position on the now empty arcane fulcrum. The Taurus took up position in a central area and the Trolls rallied. With the Knight struggling to damage the GUO, the Beasts decided to head back to a more central area. The Warriors, free from the spell, turned back to take up a defensive position against the oncoming Marauders and Forsaken. Sayl cast Thorsen’s Thunderstorm to try and hit/block the Dragon Ogres but it fell short of the target. Fantastic Foresight was dispelled. The Griffin caused enough wounds to continue the fight against the Marauders. The GUO wounded the Chaos Lord but the stalemate continued as both struggled to wound each other. The Daemonettes were finished off by the Plaguebearers The Forsaken charged the Warriors. The Dragon Ogres were unable to wheel past the Vortex so just ad to wiggle into a better position. The Ogres rallied and turned towards the nearby fulcrum. In the magic phase, the KoS tried to unbind the Taurus but it was dispelled, so he cast Acquiescence on it instead. It then unleased a Cacophonic Choir which destroyed the Griffin and wounded the Taurus. The Warriors, defending the obstacle and with their Nurgle marks fared better than the Forsaken in the combat.

The Great Taurus was not able to charge and fell short of the Dragon Ogres under the effects of Acquiescence. The Plaguebearers reformed to move around the Thunderstorm which was lingering nearby and the Beasts moved back towards the main fighting. The Lamassu unleashed a Magma Storm on the Dragon Ogres, killing 2. The Thunderstorm blew back through the Dragon Ogres causing them to become enraged and wounding another.. The Warriors only managed to fell 2 Forsaken but it was enough to break their resolve and the Forsaken fled. The frenzied Dragon Ogres charged the Plaguebearers. The Ogres charged the Lamassu atop the fulcrum. Sensing his only chance to win the battle was to start killing wizards on the fulcrums, The Exalted Hero left the Marauders and moved towards the nearby fulcrum. In the magic phase the Warriors were again the victim. First Song of Seduction was dispelled, but then the KoS cast Slothful Stupor on them, miscasting in the process, and causing a Vwroop! as his fulcrum blinked out of and back into existence in the place where the Great Unclean One’s fulcrum previously stood. The Ogre Champion managed to wound the Lamassu and win the combat, but the Lamassu remained Stubborn and held. The Dragon Ogres were unable to strike the decisive blow against Plaguebearers, who’s loci of Fecundity was proving difficult to overcome and fled the combat. The Warriors were unable to charge the fleeing Dragon Ogres due to their Slothful Stupor. The Great Taurus, now free from the spell effects, moved to the right flank to offer support in the next turn. The Beasts swung back around to try and break the deadlock still ongoing between the Chaos Lord and the Great Unclean One. Sayl engaged the KoS in a magical duel and won, forcing the KoS from it’s fulcrum and wounding it. The other GUO tried to cast Choking Foe on the KoS but it was dispelled, so it cast the Crystal Maze on the Marauders, hoping for an automatic lock-in, and miscast in the process, causing reality to flicker and the world to shift as all the casters were randomly distributed over the fulcrums. This left the Ogres with no one to fight as the Lamassu now found itself on the Sinister Statue, where the Gallows Tree originally stood. The Dragon Ogres and Forsaken rallied and the Marauders failed to find their way out of the maze. The Exalted Hero charged Sayl, who now found himself stood at the Gallows Tree fulcrum. The KoS moved towards the Lamassu and unleashed a Cacophonic Choir destroying the Taurus but not the magically resistant Lamassu. The Plaguebearers charged and broke the Forsaken again, and the Beasts charged the Knights. In the magic phase the winds of magic were incredibly weak and nothing managed to be cast. Going into Mr Blank ‘s last turn, he found himself in control of no fulcrums compared to Tamurkhan’s forces who held 3. Desperate times. The only thing left to do was charge the fulcrum with his KoS and hope the Exalted Hero could slay Sayl. The KoS managed to reduce the Lamassu to a single wound but could not finish the beast who was benefitting from the protective wards of the fulcrum. The Exalted Hero also failed to wound Sayl, who struck back and injured the Hero. This left Tamurkhan’s forces victors, with 3 fulcrums held to 0.

A win for Tamurkhan gaining me 2 Campaign points and meaning I win the first campaign phase 3-2, granting me Signs & Portents - +1 to casting rolls in the final battle. The campaign moves onto the Land of Stone & Dust.. A fun game for our first venture into Storm of Magic, full of tactical blundering and crazy magic. I really enjoy the change to deployment it forces, and the shifting battlefield. It makes you play in a completely new way. I think Mr Blank would take some extra wizards next time, I think at least 3 or 4 are required for SoM. He would also probably not have sunstroke after spending too long the day before in the sun! We are both looking forward to using some armies which are not both Chaos!

Warhammer at its finest. Fighty, ideally monstrous, wizards are really king in Storm of Magic games. I've played a few games with Empire against chaos and it seems a bit of an uphill struggle with the squishy Empire guys. Anyway, Great stuff. Thanks for sharing. You could consider angling your photos for less crotches in the pictures but then, they only distract so much Keep at it!

I definitely needed more wizards in this game but was a bit constrained by the models we actually have, also I made some bad decisions on both flanks that I'm going to blame on my partially heat-stroked brain. The chaos lord and knights getting stuck all game was a big negative!

It's finally time to crack open this beauty and start playing through the campaign! I fully expect this will take us multiple years to complete so we better get cracking. I am preparing to start my Chaos Dwarf army in a few weeks. This thread is great reading material. Thanks for documenting, and thanks for sharing.

Chapter 2
Campaign Phase 2
Battle 1: The Conquest of Giants (1500 points) 2 Campaign Point My list:
Exalted Hero (Daemonic Mount, Talisman of Endurance, Mark of Nurgle, Shield) 25 Marauders (Mark of Nurgle, Standard Bearer) 18 Warriors (Mark of Nurgle, Musician, Standard Bearer) 20 Plaguebearers (Mark of Nurgle, Musician, Standard Bearer) 3 Plague Drones Beast of Nurgle Beast of Nurgle 5 Chaos Knights (Mark of Nurgle) His list:
5 Giants He deployed all his Giants on the central hill. I placed my Warriors and Plaguebearers on one side with the 2 Beasts to their flank on one side and the Knights on the other. The Drones I put next to the Chaos Lord. My general thoughts were I would try and kill down some of the Giants, then pin the last one or two down with something which could tank the Giants, then grapple them! We rolled off and I won the roll off and chose to go second (is this even how you play this? – do you get to choose or just go first if you “win”?) since the scenario is practically impossible going first! He did nothing for his first turn, in my first turn I moved up on the Giants on all sides. On his second turn he double charged my Warriors with 2 Giants, my Plaguebearers with another and the Drones with a fourth Giant. The other moved over towards the Plaguebearers/Warriors. The Plaguebearers held up fairly well as the Giant swung with his club and felled 3. In return they dealt the Giant 3 wounds but the Giant didn’t fall. The Drones also held the Giant but failed to knock him down. The Warriors however took two swinging clubs and thunderstomps and only managed 3 wounds in return, fleeing after the heavy punishment and being cut down by the pursuers.

One of the Beasts charged the Giant fighting the Plaguebearers and the Knights charged one of the Giants who had just butchered the Warriors. The other Beast and Marauders charged the Giant fighting the Drones. The Knights wounded the Giant only once and won the combat, knocking their foe down, ready to be netted! (or so they hoped). The Plaguebearers and Beast felled the first of the Giants with their poisoned blows. The Giant fighting the Marauders and Drones managed to cling on with a single wound remaining. The fallen Giant got straight up and smashed the Knights to pieces in collaboration with another Giant. The Drones and Marauders finished off the second Giant to be killed. The Chaos forces moved up to close in on the remaining 3.. One Giant charged the nearest Beast and the other the Plaguebearers. The Beast poisoned the Giant to death before the Giant could inflict any damage. The other Giant smashed the Plaguebearers (again swinging with his club to excellent effect), overrunning to try and escape. With just 2 Giants remaining it was time to try and trap them. The Beast and Drones charged one Giant, and the other Beast charged the remaining Giant. The Marauders and Lord moved into position to deploy their grapples. Unfortunately, the Beasts and Drones reduced the Giant to it’s final wound, and as they finally managed to knock the Giant off its’ feet it died upon impact with the ground! The second Beast also hurt the Giant with particularly poisonous attacks, taking some damage in return. The Giant and Beast continued their combat as the remaining Chaos forces closed in ready to deploy their grapples on the last of the Giants.. The final Giant turn had the last Giant on 2 wounds.. The Beast survived the Giants’ onslaught but landed a single poisoned blow on the Giant, again reducing it to a single wound, and again finally knocking the Giant down which saw him wounded as he impacted the ground. The Chaos forces were ready to net and secure the beast, but alas, the Giant was now lifeless. The battle was lost. A really tough battle to win as the Chaos side! I think the tactics were not too bad, in hindsight I would have not spread my forces so much and got to killing them sooner.
