The scores were totted up and it was a really close one. Before we added on the captured standards the Chaos Dwarfs were ahead by a mere 2 victory points, but the BSB and 2 Infernal Guard standards tipped it to the Chaos Horde. What a brutal display of shooting from the Chaos Dwarfs! And how annoyingly persistent that Hellcannon was. I'm off to investigate if Mr Blank has weighted that scatter dice

Robbed of a win by the stupid victory point system of 8th edition! No VPs for the fleeing unit of 6 trolls reduced to 1 wound or the 20 chaos warriors reduced to 1 model, and lost due to killing the battle standard in the wrong way, bah! Also on the last turn i should have saved all my power dice to fireball the last warrior instead of wasting 3 on casting hell hammer on tamurkhan which was realistically never going to kill him. Still the Chaos Dwarf artillery was devastating again, I'm not sure what the best was to play against it in the future is.

Time for the latest installment of Tamurkhan. This game we rolled a Surprise Encounter and Mr Blank took the Dread Host as laid out (sort of) in Tamurkhan. He got to take Monstrous Infantry or Beasts (from Storm of Magic or all the other binding scrolls) as his core. For special, the rules say you can take Monsters under 150 points.. but there’s only 1 monster which fits that criteria.. so we extended that to 200 points. Rare is monsters over 200. The army must be led by an Emperor Dragon. Battle 2: Surprise Encounter (3000 Vs 3000 points) 2 Campaign Points Chaos Horde Vs Dread Host My list: Tamurkhan (Tyrant form) Great Unclean One (Greater Gift, Level 3) 30 Marauders (Mark of Nurgle, Great Weapons) 25 Plaguebearers 6 Chaos Knights (Lances) 6 Flamers of Tzeentch Beast of Nurgle Beast of Nurgle Soulgrinder (Nurgle, Daemonbone Claw, Warp Gaze) Mr Blank 's list Black Emperor Dragon 6 River Trolls 6 Dragon Ogres Great Eagle Great Eagle Chaos Spawn Chaos Spawn Griffon Lamassu Bale Taurus Kharybdis Arachnarok Spider Dragon Ogre Shaggoth I took Death on my GUO, thinking it would be better for removing single bit monsters. I ended up with Spirit Leech, Caress of Laniph and Soulblight.. not bad but not great. Mr Blank also took Death on his Black Dragon and got Spirit Leech, Fate of Bjuna, Purple Sun and Soulblight. My GUO rolled a bad gift so I swapped it out for the Balesword. Deployment:
As part of the deployment rules only 3 units from each side are set up in random segments of the table, the rest enter as reinforcements. Not ideal for my army really. I placed my lone Beasts and the Chaos Knights and they ended up spread reasonably far apart. Mr Blank deployed his 2 Eagles and his Griffon. Turn 1 – Dread Host:
Mr Blank rolled first turn and moved his units onto the table one-by-one into his randomly allocated segments. Fortunately for him he kept most of his army in reasonable clumps and his Trolls near to his Emperor Dragon. His Emperor Dragon moved up and Spirit Leeched the nearest Beast for a wound. Turn 1 – Chaos Horde
My forces entered the board with Tamurkhan unfortunately right on the far edge, but more worryingly, the Plaguebearers isolated on the other end of the table. The Soulgrinder and Flamers had to brave the lava pits to not be in a terrible position. The Flamers moved up the edge and peppered the nearest spawn, alongside the grapeshot from the Soulgrinder, reducing it to a single wound. The GUO Spirit Leeched the Bale Taurus down to a single wound but Caress was dispelled. Turn 2 - Dread Host:
The Dragon Ogres, Emperor Dragon and Great Eagle charged the sacrificial Beast in the centre of the board and one of the Spawns managed to charge into the flank of the Plaguebearers. The other Spawn fell short of the Flamers. The other monsters moved up, the Arachnarok, Kharybdis and Griffon down the flank to threaten the in-trouble-Plaguebearers, and the Trolls and Shaggoth turning to face the Marauders and GUO. The Bale Taurus then flew into the Sulphurous River and took it’s last wound dieing… but then Mr Blank called for a recount and on closer inspection of the rules it only takes the hits in the compulsory moves sub phase.. which is odd. The Bale Taurus then breath weaponed the Marauders who panicked and fled the table. Much despairing. Mr Blank said he would honour the dangerous terrain roll in the following subphase… what a gent 😊 No consolation. The Beast was cut to pieces by various monsters. The Spawn was hurt by the Plaguebearers but not killed which landed them in a world of trouble. Turn 2 – Chaos Horde
The GUO charged the River Trolls and the Beast tried to join him, but failed the charge. The Chaos Knights also failed their attempted charge into the Dragon Ogres. The Soul Grinder and Flamers moved up towards the centre shooting the Dragon Ogres. In the magic phase I rolled really high with Daemonic Possession but failed to possess the Emperor Dragon. The GUO cast Soulblight on the Trolls, removed a Great Eagle with Caress, then wounded the Emperor Dragon twice with Spirit Leech. The Plaguebearers continued making hard work of the Chaos Spawn. The GUO put a few wounds on the Trolls but overall was a little disappointing, and I completely forgot to count the Soulblight. Turn 3 – Dread Host
The Plaguebearers took a multiple charge from the Griffon, Kharybdis and Arachnarok Spider. The Emperor Dragon charged the Chaos Knights, which I was quite happy with since they had 6 models and a champion. The Shaggoth, Lamassu, Spawn and Dragon Ogres all turned and moved themselves back towards middle. The Emperor Dragon cast Fate of Bjuna on Tamurkhan and wounded him once. In combat, the Plaguebearers held up fairly well, taking lots of wounds but hitting all of the monsters back with poisoned attacks causing multiple wounds to the Griffon and Kharybdis. The Chaos Knight champion challenged the Emperor Dragon, going down. The Chaos Knights then failed their steadfast leadership and fled, just escaping.. so annoying my Soul Grinder was poised with it’s Daemonbone claw if they had just held. The GUO and Trolls exchanged a couple of wounds with the GUO again disappointing considering the Bale Sword. Turn 3 – Chaos Horde
The Beast charged into the Trolls and the Chaos Knights rallied. Tamurkhan moved up towards the Dragon Ogres and Bubebolos unleashed his Unspeakable Foulness breath attack. It was again a bit of a poor effort, reducing the Dragon Ogres to 3 with one heavily wounded. In the magic phase, the Reign of Chaos came up the Dark Prince Thirsts, which hit the Emperor Dragon but didn’t wound and killed the Lamassu. The GUO again cast Soulblight on the Trolls, but miscast taking a wound and ending the phase. The Flamers and Soul Grinder wounded the Emperor Dragon 3 more times taking it to 4 wounds. The Plaguebearers were finally eradicated by the combined attacks of the monsters but managed to reduce the Griffon to 2 wounds, the Spawn to a single wound, and the Kharybdis to a single wound. The GUO and the Beast broke the Trolls as the Emperor Dragon had pursued out of Inspiring Presence range, but failed to catch them and ended up in the lava pit, taking the GUO to a single wound.

Turn 4 - Dread Host
The Dragon Ogres charged the Soul Grinder and the Emperor Dragon charged the Chaos Knights. The Spawn fell short of the Soul Grinder. The Kharybdis retired to the corner with his single wound whilst the other monsters moved back towards the action. The Shaggoth turned to face the GUO and Beast. The Trolls somehow rallied. The magic phase was unmemorable and the Emperor Dragon devoured the Chaos Knights with no problem. The Soulgrinder proved a tough adversary for the Dragon Ogres, trapping one in it’s claw and putting a few wounds on it. The toughness 7, mark of nurgle, 4+, 5++ was tough for them to get through. Turn 4 – Chaos Horde
The Beast and GUO charged the Trolls. The Flamers stood in front of the Emperor Dragon lining up one last super shot. I then made an error, I moved Tamurkhan in front of the Arachnarok protecting the Soul Grinder’s flank. In the magic phase I opted to not cast anything to preserve my GUO. The GUO and Beast did little damage to the Trolls but broke them, the Beast going down in the process. The Trolls escaped the pursuit. The Flamers poured the hits onto the Emperor Dragon but only managed to reduce it to 2 wounds. The Soul Grinder took a few more wounds from the Dragon Ogres, taking it to 3, killing and wounding a Dragon Ogre in return. Turn 5 – Dread Host
The Griffon and Eagle charged the Soul Grinder and the Spawn managed to make the move into it’s rear. The Emperor Dragon charged the Flamers. The Shaggoth tried to charge the GUO but failed it’s charge and took a wound in the lava pit. The Arachnarok decided not to charge Tamurkhan and backed away. The Emperor Dragon didn’t do too well against the Flamers who made the most of their mark of Tzeentch and Daemonic ward. The Flamers then put 3 wounds back onto the Emperor Dragon! And Mr Blank only went and made 3x 6 armour saves. Boo indeed. The Soul Grinder managed to survive the combat unwounded, reducing the Dragon Ogres to a single wound. Turn 5 – Chaos Host
The game actually felt quite close, surprisingly. I was regretting wasting a turn of Tamurkhan with that attempted block since he was now out of all charge range. He made a long march around the side of the Emperor Dragon. The GUO chose not to charge off the Trolls, and instead moved alongside the Shaggoth to try and magic him, and if not, magic something else next turn. The Soul Grinder continued to prove too tough for the combined enemies and killed the Griffon. The Flamers finally succumbed to the Emperor Dragon but reduced it to a single wound Turn 6 – Dread Host
The Chaos Spawn and Arachnarok charged into the Soul Grinder. The Emperor Dragon decided to move up and try and magic off the GUO.. a somewhat risky move which surprised me given Mr Blank ‘s play-safe nature 😊 The Soul Grinder continued to tank the attacks and removed the Spawn and Dragon Ogres, but this time lost the combat. I then absolutely cocked it and failed it’s Daemonic Instability taking it’s last 2 wounds! The Emperor Dragon failed to magic off the GUO, one attempt dispelled and the next failing to meet casting value. Turn 6 – Chaos Host
The game suddenly felt very much alive! I thought this was a done deal earlier and I would be lucky not to be tabled but there was a sniff… The only question was what to try and kill. The GUO could try for the Kharybdis or the Emperor Dragon. I opted to try for glory and moved up to the Emperor Dragon in preparation for the magic phase. Tamurkhan opted to go for the bigger ticket item and charged the Arachnarok. The GUO cast Caress first and failed to wound the Dragon. It then tried for Spirit Leech but Mr Blank rolled all his die and dispelled it. Tamurkhan and Bubebolos put a lot of pain onto the Arachnarok, but left it with a single wound… how annoying. It held. My gut feeling was I needed one of those dead. We added up the scores and I was marginally ahead on VP, but before we had taken into account the captured standards so it was a reverse of the last game. My gut feeling was right, all those monsters left on single wounds – almost had it. Mr Blank wins! 2 CP to him which makes it 2-2 for this campaign phase with one game to play, vs the Chaos Dwarfs again when we next get a chance.

1 small correction, the dragon actually failed 2 out of 3 armour saves when it had 2 wounds left but I rolled 2 6s for the regeneration it had due to being wounded by warpflame the previous turn, gotta love the warpflame rule!

Been a while but we managed to get a game in last week to bring us to the end of campaign phase 3. The phase was tied at 2CP - 2CP so it was the decider. We rolled the Dawn Attack scenario. I had opted for a Khorne list since I have been busy painting them but must admit, I did bitch out from playing like a true Khorne champion and took Sayl the Faithless. Mr Blank played Chaos Dwarfs. Battle 3: Dawn Attack (3000 Vs 3000 points) 1 Campaign Points Chaos Horde Vs Chaos Dwarfs My list: Sayl the Faithless Bloodthirster (Greater Gift, Lesser Gift) Herald of Khorne (Juggernaut, Lesser Gift, Locus of Wrath) Nightmaw 19 Chaos Warriors (Mark of Khorne, Halberds) 20 Bloodletters Chaos Chariot (Mark of Khorne) 5 Bloodcrushers 5 Flesh Hounds (Ambushers) Chaos Spawn Skull Cannon Soul Grinder (Mark of Khorne, Daemonbone Claw, Phlegm Bombardment) Mr Blank's list Sorcerer Prophet (Level 4, Lamassu, Talisman of Preservation) Daemon Smith Castellan (Battle Standard, Dawnstone?) 30 Infernal Guard 29 Infernal Guard (Blunderbusses) 30 Hobgoblins 10 Bull Centaurs (Shields) Deathshreiker Rocket Dreadquake Mortar (Slave Ogre) Hellcannon 5 Hobgoblin Wolfriders Sayl took Shadow and rolled Pit of Shades, The Withering and Steed of Shadows which I swapped for Melkoth's. The Bloodthirster rolled Soul Eater (which I kept) and Noxious Breath which I swapped for Blade of Blood. The Herald rolled Dark Blessing. Mr Blank rolled Ash Storm, Flames of Azgorh, Curse of Hashut and Burning Wrath. The Daemon Smith took Fireball and the Lamassu rolled Enfeebling Foe. We rolled low on the scenery table and set up a river, some lava pits and a few buildings. I rolled to set up first as per the scenario and deployed my entire army which was randomised between the 3 deployment areas. My cruchers and chariot ended up on my left flank and the rest was deployed slightly right-sided. The river was annoyingly positioned which meant I was going to have a turn I couldn't march whichever side of the board I had taken. I put the Bloodthirster down behind as much cover as there was. Mr Blank rolled pretty well with his deployment and managed to keep his forces mostly together and the Daemon Smith with his war machines. His Infernal Guard were a bit isolated out on one flank though. I rolled first turn (hooray) Chaos Turn 1 I advanced everything, marching up to the river edge with most of my army. The Spawns rolled low so stalled on the river crossing point. The Skullcannon moved up behind them. The Bloodthirster moved up slightly, using the Soul Grinder as some form of cover. I rolled Storm of Fire on the Reign of Chaos Table and managed to target nearly all of @mrblanks units. Unfortunately the scatter meant only the Wolf Riders took casualties, losing 3 but passing their Panic test. Sayl channelled a dice and 6 diced Pit of Shades at the Blunderbusses. I got greedy and went for the big one but I miscast and the pit scattered wide of everything. Sayl used Schalkain's Teeth to pass the miscast off onto Nightmaw, who took a wound and also wounded the other nearby spawn with the detonation. The Skullcannon lined up the Daemonsmith who was loitering in front of the Dreadquake and managed to hit both. Mr Blank pondered using his Look Out Sir but decided to gamble on his ward save blocking the shot. It did not and the Daemon Smith was splattered then the Dreadquake also took 4 wounds anyway. The Soul Grinder missed it's shot at the Blunderbusses. Chaos Dwarf Turn 1 Mr Blank weighed up charging his Bull Centaurs and decided he reckoned they could take the Bloodcrushers. They made a long charge as the rest of his army moved (slowly) forwards. The Lamassu moved around to his left and the Blunderbusses moved to bring their weapons in range of the enemy as they crossed the river. The Sorcerer cast Ash Cloud on the Chaos Warriors and Curse of Hashut on the Skull cannon, wounding it. I split my dice between trying to dispel both foolishly and fell just short of both. The Deathshreiker scored a direct hit on the Soulgrinder with a Demolition rocket but failed to wound it. The Dreadquake misfired and was incapacitated. Mr Blank was missing his Daemonsmith already. The Hellcannon was off target. The Bull Centaurs and the Juggernauts were pretty much at a stand-still with both proving very tough to wound. The Bull Centaur Champion wounded the Juggernaut champion in a challenge.

Chaos Turn 2 Hindered by the river there was not much I could do. The Chariot obviously charged the the Bull Centaurs. The Flesh Hounds entered as ambushers in behind the Blunderbusses. The Warriors opted not to move as they were engulfed in the ash cloud. The Spawns both rolled terribly again and trickled over the river. The Bloodthirster moved right up using the Dreadstone Blight as cover from the Blunderbusses to threaten the war machines in the centre. The Reign of Chaos did little and I was unable to cast anything as Sayl was in the ash. The Soulgrinder was again off target with it's shooting. The weight of the Chariot charge and a few wounds coupled with some bad attack rolling from the Centaurs was enough to win the combat but Mr Blank made his Ld4 test and they held. The Bull Centaurs with shields were proving incredibly durable. Chaos Dwarf Turn 2 The Infernal Guard and Hobgoblins moved up to try and support the Bull Centaurs but were unable to access the flank of the Bloodcrushers so were in an awkward position. The Hellcannon backed away in the centre to try and avoid a double charge. The Wolf Riders moved up the block a Chaos Spawn and the Lamassu moved in behind the Warriors. The Sorcerer cast Burning Wrath on the Warriors then killed the Skullcannon with Curse of Hashut. Ash Storm was dispelled. The Deathshreiker again landed a hit with a Demolition Rocket but again rolled a 1 to wound on the Soulgrinder! The Blunderbusses took aim against Nightmaw but Mr Blank realised he did not have 20 firing models because he had not armed the Castellan with a missile weapon so lost the re-rolls to wound. They only put a couple of wounds on Nightmaw due to his regeneration and Shadow-kin. The Centaurs made lots of armour saves and held up against the Bloodcrushers and Chariot
