Guys, it's simple Waystalker (only char with "Hawk-eye" rule) cannot take Hail arrow. It's 30pts, and Waystalker has only 25pts allowance. I was playing catch up and glad someone else posted this 👍

knoffles Some day I'll "torture" you with questions about wood elves (I need in some modelling/converting advices) . I’ll be honest and say I very rarely convert anything. Love seeing what other do though 😁

What kind of converting are you looking at? Well, difference between: - Glade guard, deepwood scouts and waywarchers - they are all just "elf-thing dudes with bows" for me (as for chaos-armies player). How to recognize/differentiate them (except by movement trays)? Add more "disguise/camouflage"? - Thorn sisters and Wild riders. Are there any differences between mounts? (They are both from the same kit, I know). You may text me message to avoid littering here. FvonSigmaringen No. To the one and only god Malal

For my glade guard I really went to town with camouflage, for deepened scouts I used the more dynamic legs that give the impression of them moving, you could also swap in legs from shadow warriors to make champs, also I used the arms I could angle to give a more Legolas feel to the to make deep wood scouts, check the 8th AB for the picture of a deep wood scout. For Waywatchers just more camouflage and use the hooded heads I'm trying to make some that are crouched down to give an even more stealthy look. Hope this helps.

I have a serious love for the older 4th Ed waywatchers models and their cloaks are covered in leaves (almost a ghillie suit). That has always set the tone for me for them and anything else doesn’t look right now.

Back on topic... As Crazy_Dokta correctly pointed out, the Waywatcher cannot take the item anyways because of the point limitation. So that's cleared. But weather the HoDA is a shooting attack or not is still unanswered... Let's assume the HoDA is not a shooting attack. How does this it work? - Are the 3D6 multiple SHOTS auto hit like magic missiles? If not, how to determine the number of hits? Which rule to use?
- Why the reference to dice rolling in the description? (Declare that the Hail of Doom Arrow is being used before any dice are rolled) And which dice? Dice for what?
- Does the HoDA ignore shooting modifiers (range, cover, multiple shots, etc) as its not a shooting attack?
- Is it unaffected by effects like the Skaven Storm Banner, which only affect shooting attacks?
There is nothing written which is stating the HoDA is a special attack. And there is nothing written about how to determine hits i.e. the HoDA has to use established rules, and these are magic missiles (auto hit) or shooting attacks. Definitely not an undefined special attack. And I believe we all agree the HoDA isn't a magic missile. Yes, there is a debatable sentence in the description of the HoDA (The Hail of Doom Arrow can be used instead of making a Shooting attack with the bearer's Asrai longbow.), which obviously can be interpreted either way. So isn't this the exact use case for the "golden rule" if there is a simple solution, it is usually the right solution.
To me the simple solution is HoDA is a shooting attack. Anything else just generates more questions and unclear issues.

What is the actual issue here? I always used the HoDA simular to the Ratling gun. Roll for the shots then roll to hit.

There is potential for HoDA to interact with other special rules that apply to shooting attacks. For instance, do High Elf Swordmasters get to use their Deflect Shots special rule against wounds caused by HoDA?

Well, that Swordmaster rule applies to non-magical shooting attacks… And as covered above HoDA is an Enchanted Item. Not a Magic Weapon. There are no rules for attacking with Enchanted Items. Is it a shooting attack? Does it "count as" a shooting attack? Is it a magical attack?

Having read through the rules the HoDA is a shooting attack as per the BRB so all the penalties for rolling to hit apply as it is not a magic missile and does not say automatic hits. When used it replaces the Asrai longbow profile in the same way that the enchanted arrows on page 37 of the AB replace the Asrai longbow profile. Because it is a magic item then it would count as magical in the same way that engineering runes affect a dwarf cannon. So the sword masters would get their ability and ethereal creatures can be affected by it. In addition, there is no restriction on taking both HoDA and enchanted arrows as enchanted arrows are an equipment option and HoDA comes out of the magic items allowance you just have to declare HoDA is being used in which case you must use its profile and it cannot be buffed Arcane bodkin as they are clearly two separate enchanted items. The only buff that is available is the spell Blades of Aiban.

Having read through the rules the HoDA is a shooting attack as per the BRB... I agree with your conclusion. But for the record, where do you see rules saying HoDA is a shooting attack? HoDA is an Enchanted Item not a Magic Weapon. Implying HoDA is not a weapon. The BRB doesn't have rules for using an Enchanted Item to attack. Or maybe the fact HoDA has a weapon profile means it is a weapon. That would mean being an Enchanted Item and a weapon are not mutually exclusive conditions.
