Thanks guys. motton has it right. I picked the most armored bodies/heads from all generations of plastics (melee and shooters). Then I added the tassets from the 5th edition soldiers box (made a greenstuff mold, you only got a couple/box back in the days. on some models I had to shave off puffy bits to make this work). Guns are the current plastics, on some I cut off the arms and used whatever came with the body. Now here is the secret sauce: what makes a handgunner a handgunner? the handgun you say? Yes, but there is more, they also need powder/shot pouches. There are a few options, the nicest ones are the metal bits from the 5th edition box (the one with the tiny handguns). There are also some in the current handgunner box, and I think I also used some from the Warlord landsknecht plastic box. ...and there you have it. Ironsides.
mottdon, glad you approve of how I've put your gift to work.

Hello Hello. Update time but, don’t get too excited. Volganof isn’t even an inch closer. I was intrigued by GW’s white contrast paint. Would it be possible to slap on ‘one thick coat’ and have nice white with awesome shading? Seemed too good to be true. I had to try it and turns out it was. Here are Reiklander Schuetzen. Not too happy with the contrast white. It pools as a kind of grey that doesn’t look very cloth like. I suppose it might work better on some kind of Star Wars Stormtrooper-style models. More of a plastic or ceramic kind vibe. Anyway, the Schuetzen will still shoot just fine. A close-up with another recent addition, a nice Beast Mage I was able to get from a friendly gentleman on another forum. I think I might get close to having representatives from all eight colleges on foot. Mounted not so much. I really like the chunky wizard sculpts of this generation with all their trinkets. I had eyed this model for years on ebay and never noticed his little friend there on the shoulder. ...and that's a wrap. Upward and Onward, just not always towards Volganof.

Nice! I think the white looks nice but might need some cleanup on the pools if you want fabric feeling. Shades of grey looks really good though.

Lovely work on those handgunners. And I agree that the white contrast paint is fairly disappointing, which is odd, as most of the other ones I've tried worked very well. I also like your work on the Beorn-wannabe, is he one of the plastic wizards from warhammer quest/talisman?
On a side note it must be really frustrating for blackpowder-weapon wielding footmen to be dressed in white. Endless laundry days I imagine!

cheers, Tubis.
That beast wizard is metal. There is a similar, yet even more chunky plastic version, easy to tell apart because he has the other arm up with a claw. Don't know which came first.
Regarding the practicality of white, that was puzzling to me as well. But, turns out, people back then weren't (all) ostentatious idiots. For example, the Habsburgs were notorious for white uniforms. Now this is 18th century stuff, but I would assume it holds true for a couple hundred years earlier as well as a world with dragons and polar warp gates.
From: "The modern reader might well question how white or pearl grey undyed wool could be a practical uniform for parades and battles. In fact undyed wool could be brought up with pipe clay to a dazzling white, while blue, red and green coats all lost their colour after a little wear owing to the deficiencies of eighteenth-century dyes. The Habsburg white was therefore an eminently practical colour and no attempt was made to change it. Regiments were distinguished by shades of red, green, orange, yellow, blue and black in the facing colour, and increasingly in the colour of their buttons."

30Aug20 In non-Volganof but at least Empire news, I recently had the opportunity (Thanks again, Artobans Ghost) to get my grubby paws on some of my favorite Empire archers from the glory days. The label on their tabs (Bergjaeger and Forstjaeger) brought back some fuzzy memories and I decided to investigate. Turns out way back when in 3rd edition Warhammer Armies, the Empire could field two kinds of archers. Really the only difference is the armor, kind of overdone in the models, that armor does not look so light, Forstjaeger here: And Bergjaeger here: (though, just to confuse you, the guy on the left is modern plastic) Why armor would be appropriate in the forest but not in the mountains, only GW knows. The modern plastic archer fit in quite nicely with the Bergjaeger, if I can get a hold of a few more guys with armor, I could nicely split this into two units and fill up the Bergjaeger with plastics. Anyway, probably way more than you wanted to know about the Empire Jaeger Corps. Currently working my way through some shiny Knights of the Blazing Sun, so that likely will be next. Upward and onward

That bought back some memories. I had to go and dig out my armies book and the 3rd Ed rule book for some nostalgia time. Great work on some classics.

Love that banner guy!
It's crazy how well the plastics and those long OOPS fit together. Great job making them look cohesive.

Amazing paint jobs, and also I like how you set them up for the photos, cracking images. Really like it, you have a talent, especially like some of the fun touches like opening a genie flask, and the prisoner in the cage! Thanks for sharing

25Jan2021 Why would it take so long to update? Not sure, I think taking pictures just isn’t my favorite thing to do (though posting pictures and chatting a bit with you certainly is). Well, I have been painting over the last couple month and some of it was Empire, so here we go, the promised Blazing Sun Knights: A unit mostly with the old command here And then not quite as old here The latter are from a Blazing Sun upgrade pack that come out much later than the plastic knights. I always liked the bits but it seemed a bit pricey for what it was and then it was gone. Then for years one could spend a fortune on email if any came up at all and so I bid my time (…or rather just gave up). Until, one random day, a fine gentlemen going by gorfung on EEFL and elsewhere just stumbled upon some in a lonely hobby store somewhere in the frozen north that had a treasure trove of old GW. And, instead of making a fortune on email he passed it on to fellow hobbyists at cost. This of course meant painting up all the old metal Blazing sun I had in my stash and filling up the units with plastic knights to make use of the two commands. So, Grandmaster facing off. very old on the left and less old but still old by now (and technically a unit champion) on the right. And standard bearers And musicians (okay fine, there was no musician for the original set, that one is a hack job) Lastly troopers, some sit in the saddle a bit better than others. I did go full on green stuff/mold to make enough of the shields. Helps give the unit a bit more character. This completes my tetrad of the 4th edition Knightly Orders. One hobby life goal off the list. Upward and onward!

Those are really good, good colour scheme! Also, I really want to get hold of that 3rd edition book with the archer rules in, must have lots of good lore in it.

Thanks, mark.
The 3rd edition rulebook is neat. Lots of good art, the lore is less developed for some areas e.g. Empire, but then there is lots of stuff in there that has fallen by the wayside in later editions. Highly recommend the book. Though full disclosure, that archer page snippet is from a supplemental 3rd ed book called 'Warhammer Armies' which is mostly army lists in the modern sense with much less lore-like stuff. BUT that book does contain an infamous picture of mulleted young Bryan Ansell hovering proudly over his army. You decide which book to hunt down now.

The knights are ultra-ace.
I am starting to think that if all the Empire players out there put our forces together we could easily, and I can't stress that enough, conquer the world!
