Mordheim is like Blood Bowl and Necromunda in that what makes it great is the narrative long term development of the warband. The interaction with complex scenery is much also better in Mordheim and Necromunda then it is in other larger scale tabletop games.
AoS as released by GW is a different game. It's designed for armies like 8th ed was and 40K is not teams of 6-16 models like the Mordheim/Necromunda (and now Shadow War Armageddon which is a rererelease of Necromunda.) It's really not scratching the same itch as a small skirmish game - but it's actually a pretty good wargame overall. There are as noted some fan made rules set that put a Mordheim spin on the AoS rules set.

Unfortunately I can't personally compare the two as, though I've made Mordheim warbands, I've never gotten a chance to play it yet. Though from Mordheim veteran battle reports I have read them enjoying using AoS rules for their Mordheim games as the skirmish element fits nicely together. The fanmade Hinterlands and AoS28 are widely popular for doing this as well by combining AoS with elements of Mordheim and rpgs. On another note, Hastings said he got wind of a Mordheim game for 2018 so you can wait to see if that appeals to you. Warhammer could be played at skirmish level too : Ie 6th edition. Always fun to see aos leeching ideas from Warhammer and Mordheim, it'd be really nothing without that.

Well yeah that could be skirmish level, there was even a thing called Warhammer Skirmish! Not sure what AoS leeched, though. Setting doesn't count as that's the entire premise of Warhammer, take fantasy/sci-fi cliches and mix in grimdark to make them awesome. Is it the possible Mordheim? Hard to be nothing without it when it hasn't even used it yet and is still a success. [Edit]:It couldn't be the continuation of Old World armies, between the armies that filled EBay and people porting over to AoS that had full armies already that didn't need to spend anything due to the free rules, that was more a hindrance than profit bonus.
