Now that Adele tune is stuck in your head.
GW has taken down most of the Dwarf range and some of the wood elf over the last week or so. I'm hoping it is just to rerelease it on round bases (as it includes the newer hammerer and irondrakes duel kits) but thought I'd flag it just in case as the wood elves include the older plastic Glade guards.

Who knows. We knew that they were moving toward this though. Their goal (painfully obvious, though they said that you could still play AoS with your old armies) was to eventually replace all of the Fantasy range with new, EXTREMELY expensive AoS models. That way they make us old guard, who want to bite on the AoS gimmick, spend even more money than we already have.
Before now, it simply wasn't feasible for them (within a limited timeframe) to introduce all the new game models that will be REQUIRED to competitively play a game of AoS. They have simply been "borrowing" from the existing Fantasy line until they replace all of it. They also are a little less likely to ward away old players like us, and new players who see them dump on their loyal customer base.
Just like with the End Times books, there was a lot of early excitement about them, but as more and more books were released, people who initially said, "No! They'll NEVER kill the game!" started realizing that they were doing exactly that. And they also started realizing that they had spent hundreds of dollars on something that they were about to abandon.
I'm sure that GW will maintain that you can still play with our 8th models in AoS, but it will be akin to expecting to win a game running 10 Goblins vs a Steam Tank. Possible, but not likely. If you want to win, buy the new expensive stuff.

Best army in AoS right now is arguable someplace between Tomb Kings, Chaos warriors (backed by a $30 for two character models forgeworld character that gives them movement bonuses) or something including lots of Tzeentch Skyfires.
Only one of those is particularly new/expensive. One isn't officially being produced anymore by GW.
GW have never done a particularly good job of making their new stuff better in a way that makes it consistently attractive to players. Sometimes it's quite good (warlocks in Dark elves) sometimes it's terrible (slaughterbeast/mutalith vortex kit) sometimes it's just okay and thus not a "must get" by someone with an existing army.
Stormcast are the 'flagship army' of AoS and anyone playing them is buying a full army from scratch but they aren't considered a particularly competitive army.

But now you have 2 kinds of Dwarfs, all the elves combined, the Tree-race, as well as the new Chaos models that came with the starter kit and army expansion pieces for those as well. Can you use the old models? Sure. Until they come out with a new shiny one and stop making the 8th edition one.

Fortunately there are other manufacturers making Not-Warhammer minis...

Well sure the product line gets changed and they don't necessarily continue to produce old models. I've got something like 5 generations of chaos warriors in my figure cases each was out of production when the next arrived. They don't look that much like each other. Unlike previous editions they provided free rules for older models to be used in AoS. Players weren't given that option with various edition changes prior to AoS - some models just didn't have any way to field them with an edition change. My marauders with bows, centaurs with bows, giant scorpion riding goblins, fimir, halfling infantry, imperial ogres, dogs of war all disappeared with not much of an option to use them. A subfaction for orcs were rereleased in AoS and old black orcs and savage orc models featured in the release. Similarly older Ogre monsters are the center of the new Ogre Beastclaw subfaction. Ghouls and various other undead units are the center of the Flesheater courts. Lizards are the Seraphon faction. Actually to summarize see this link a lot of the splash AoS releases have been just providing new subfaction options for 8th ed (and older) kits. www.tga.community/forums/topic/8804-a-quick-guide-to-how-do-the-aos-factions-play/There are _new_ subfactions (Fireslayers and Kharadron and Stormcast) but that doesn't mean they aren't going to release another dwarf faction using the old dwarf models.

Now I'd better hoard the High Elves and Empire lines before Ebay makes a killing for it. In this uncertain future, painting slow really works against you now, tsk tsk...

I think if you are particularly desperate to have any of the old kits it is probably wise to grab them and put them away somewhere. Although a lot of the stuff that has gone I expect is just for rebasing, I would not be 100% confident that everything will return to the shelves. Just look at the Empire Knights..

I'm not up on AoS fluff so not sure how much they are covered there but the thing that is jumping out at me is the glaring absence of new elf models (with the exception of alarielle but I think she's under the sylvaneth book). Chunks of all the elf range have already gone so I'd be curious to know if they will 'evolve' as the dwarves have done or just disappear. You'd think humans will also change too considering the storm cast are meant to be plucked from their ranks (I think - I only read the first AoS book and it was ages ago so that may be fake news).

I think the idea is the phasing out of all the old fantasy kits. I would guess the newer kits are more safe from this, such as the Dwarf Hammerers, Dark Elf elites etc. They will get replaced with sparkly new version which aren't in any way the same.
Which Elves have gone?

Just ransacked the GW stores just in case (and still missed a ton). Many High Elves/Dark Elves/Empire units are unavailable (God knows whether they will return or not). I don't know for the UK/US gamers but for international players like myself, it's very dire warning.

GW may of course just be restocking as 40K has come out, there's always a chance - and we've said it for years that they'll drop fantasy all together. I don't follow AoS but the online paperwork has to be cheap as chips, no real storage anywhere, probably get it all on a 2 MB flash drive. Has AoS been the Guinea pig for the new 40K?

It's looking like that was the purpose of AoS. Also to save PR face.
I can't imagine that the older model sets are selling all that well anymore. Even for AoS play. They aren't even the same size as the new models. But I have to agree with Horace, I think that they are simply going through a repackaging with a lot of the newer (Hammerers), more popular option models. I don't expect all of them to return (like the old Slayers) but I expect some of them to.

not gonna lie, even after all this time thinking about the way they canned 8th still saddens me... and seeing the older models slowly fade away fills me with nostalgia. I understand I'm a grognard, and nostalgia is pretty much my lot in life but the Old World represented hundreds of hours of great times and comradeship! also these new dwarfs with the steampunk top hats... no, just no!

Also don't forget though that there are plenty of other manufacturers out there that make pretty decent dwarfs. Other armies may not be so fortunate but I know that the high fantasy dwarf is something that a lot of manufacturers have taken stabs at.
I'd take this opportunity though to pick up things like gyrocopters that don't really fit in with the high fantasy but are "GW fantasy". I know I'm planning on buying 3 gyrocopters ASAP so that when time comes around to work on dwarves the models will be there.
Also I found an unopened dwarf king on shield bearers on Dakka! It arrives today! I'm excited.
