Mind you, I've played only a handful of 8th edition battles but I have been looking at youtube batreps as well as viewing army list threads around the interwebs. My issue at the moment is that characters like Mortarion and Typhus (Death Guard) and Guilliman (space marines) seem to be an auto-include. As a WFB fan I do appreciate the rich lore of warhammer characters and the drama of them in our games. I do not, however, want to see armies built around these named characters at every turn. Side note, my Crimson Fist army has Pedro Kantor in it at sizes over 1500 points. Add in knight titans and stuff and 40k can get unfun pretty quick. I'm eager to see what the Daboyz scene looks like in a few weeks for 40k. A friend of mine, a casual gamer, is coming up from Long Island to play on the 40k side and I seriously hope these builds don't create an unpleasant experience for him.

One of my favourite 40k bloggers attended a tournament where something like 50% of the armies were the mars mech ones (showing my awesome 40k knowledge here) and all had belious crawl. He was moaning about it too.

I'm not a fan of Games Workshop anymore. Their current game systems are watered down pathetic shadows of what they once were. They're a company that makes and sells overpriced miniatures (to be fair they look really good) and the game systems themselves are just a delivery system for the miniatures. You can't persuade me that in order to be "competitive" everyone NEEDS this $100+ dollar SINGLE MODEL that probably cost them less that $5 to make. Yes, I understand sculptor/mold costs and all that but...it's still expensive at half their current cost. People will always find ways to break the game, especially when there's money and/or bragging rights involved. For some that's the fun, I would just say: find a group/friend that enjoys the game for the same reason you do and just enjoy it if that's your thing. I'm having to resort to playing against myself. For some reason the local folks here are satisfied with the tripe that is AoS. They get together every Friday and there's a lot of them I've tried friending the few folks on Facebook who (supposedly) are still interested in 8th, but I've had little to no luck with that. Patience.

@rich I hope your friend enjoys himself. Sometimes you are the hammer sometimes you are the nail when it comes to warhammer the important thing is having fun.
If you want a sense of the 'meta' take a listen to the canhammer podcast highly competitive 40K gamers a lot of which will be at Da Boyz (but not their main host Chris)
GW knows the competitive scene isnt well balanced right now.
There is a new 40K supplement coming out in December that is reportedly going to rebalance the 40K competitive scene. I think something somewaht like the yearly General's Handbook in AoS (which tweaks Matched Play rules, adds buffs to weaker books and repoints some units each year.) Some of the really really big 40K events in the country (but not Da Boyz) reportedly have playtesters on the team.

It was a ynarri list (again making up the spelling but the eldar one).

I've actually run into this same problem. Since I recently started a 40K army (Skitarii - Ad Mech), I've been trying to garner some inkling as to what I needed to collect. I joined and quizzed several 40K sites and other Skitarii players. EVERY ONE said that I needed Belisarius Cawl. Apparently the entire army revolves around him - for whatever reason. I found that a little disappointing since there are some really cool concept models out there for the army. Y'all know I'm not a "netlist" player, so this really got under my skin, but I'm new to the game and don't really know what I'm doing yet, so.....

This is why I like playing in a more casual manner, even 40k

After so much promise about the greatest Edition of 40k, our enthusiasm has been rather dampened a bit with massive bitching, nerdrage all over the internet. And the 'new' GW have been responding in a typical GW fashion we know and love, panically handing out massive nerfs to anything even looking slight funny. The physical codexes are all but useless with points going up and down all over the places every month. For example, the Astra Militarum released at the beginning of October had to suffer 2 massive changes in an Errata 2 weeks after release and in a Chapter Improved early December, rendering the book practically unuseable (but who pay us back our 50 quids, eh!) Even in their worst state, Warhammer Fantasy, I think, could never reach this kind of collossal dementia

GW has lost focus on producing quality games in recent years, partly due to the studio losing what control they had. Their attitude has improved in terms of engagement recently but I still doubt their care levels in the games they put out.
It seems nowadays they only want over simplified quick games to try and shift models. Almost like the rules are a inconvenient chore.
