Hello all,
It's that time again! We're talking "Most Feared Units" in an army, a new series to talk about what each person finds most scary or threatening in that army and how they deal with it. Today, we're talking Vampire Counts! So that means Terrorgheists, blender lords, necromancer that raise dead here, there and everywhere, blood knights and more!
So let us know in the comments below: what unit do you fear (or prepare for) the most when facing Vampire Counts. And how do you deal with it?
Go!

Fear the VC general who knows how to effectively use zombie blocks!

Deffo The Blender Lord... But you can only fight him if you know there's no Terrorgeist about, shouting discouragement at you!

Terrorgheists. Not allowing armor saves REALLY messes up Warriors of Chaos...in a really bad way. It's painful watching skullcrushers die to these things. AND THEY CAN DO IT WHILE THEY OR THEIR TARGET IS IN COMBAT.
Tzeentch marked flying characters, Chimeras, and Hellcannons are my answer to these things; I would suggest a Daemon Prince, but it's FAR too many points and/or too big a lynchpin in the army to risk being screamed off the table if things don't go your way - do it if you have no other choice though. If you can strip some wounds off them early with the Hellcannons (or get lucky and kill them in one go) then the scream isn't as fearsome, and it makes mop-up easier. Ideally you want to kill them in a single go as they can scream at you in their following turn (hopefully just the one time before you kill them).

I don’t mind one Terrorgheist, it’s the double terrorgheist and blender rolled into one list. Apart from that I always really enjoy playing VCs. They are one of my favourite classic armies.

I've not played against 8th ed VC but the terrorgheist seems a bit over powered...

Screaming in to combat is the killer... Out of the box warhammer doesn't allow screaming in to combat, does it?

From what I recall only Vampire Counts have the ability to scream (shoot) into combat. And it's limited to Terrorgheists, Banshees (including the ones that are part of the throne thing), and the Vampire with the special screamy sword. Skaven can do it, but it's limited to combats involving slaves, and only if there's no characters in the slave block. One disadvantage of the Terrorgheist though is it's HUGE footprint. With clever chaff placement the thing can get nowhere near the important units in order to scream at them as it simply won't be able to fit. This is another tactic that works effectively, regardless of the opponent. EDIT: remember too that if they want to move further than 10" (flying march) then they have to stay close to their general. This is another one of their weaknesses as it's possible with clever placement (why this game is so much better than it's successor) to deny them a place to land and thus either force them to wait a turn or two, or land into a suboptimal position thus allowing you to (possibly) get a charge at them next turn. One thing you don't want is that all-important 2/3 turn 20" fly into the rear/flank of your important unit(s) where it can safely move 10" for the rest of the game doing whatever it wants because you can't get front facing on it for a next turn charge. Terrogheists aren't that overpowered, they're just a great unit in an army of mostly lackluster ones. They're expensive and not great in combat. And knoffles is correct. One is fine, it's double terrorgheists + blender lord that make Vampires truly terrifying, not to mention grave guard. Grave guard terrify me because they're S6 great weapons with killing blow. The only unit i have in my army that want to go anywhere near that is marauders because they don't care about high S attacks that outright kill their target.

Terrorgheists are bad news. So are Grave Guard and Blender Lord's for the reasons mentioned above. But something that hasn't been talked about are Mortis Engines.
Mortis Engines are bad enough, but take 2-3 of them, with lots of low-level casters all spamming the Sig spell, then you're in for a grind that'll see you never get anywhere. All you can do is target the smallest units and hope you can play the avoidance game for 6 rounds. Good luck doing that with multitudes of Zombies on the board!

I don't mind Terrorgheists actually. I think they are a very cool edition to the game with an amazing miniature to boot.
I actually remember when the 8th VC book first dropped 'the internet' (I'm thinking Warseer in particular) was moaning how underpowered and useless they were on their massive bases and that no one would ever field them with their low WS and lack of armor save..... Fast forward a year or so and they were in many tournament lists and the double gheist screamy lists became a thing.
If they were on chariot bases I'd have more of an issue but I'm actually a big fan of the Terrorgheists and used to enjoy facing one or two of them back in the day.....dwarfs were my main army back then which may have had something to do with it though haha.
It hasn't been mentioned yet so I actually find ethereal stuff annoying as I am quite random with my lists and if you don't have anti-ethereal stuff in your list and face a heavy ethereal list it's basically impossible to deal with. Terrorgheists can hypothetically be killed by anything and blender lords can miscast and pop themselves and cost Greater Daemon level points.....
After the magic spam of VC 7th edition (with Warhammer 7th) I really like 8th edition and the latest VC book. Alas the cover art suffered big time in the edition shift.
My pet peeve as a TK player is how the skeletons stack up and how Grave Guard are just that little bit better than Tomb Guard for the points (heavy vs light armor)

My pet peeve is definitely based on personal anecdotes rather than straight mathammer, but the black coach is the absolute worst to deal with. My opponent never ceases to generate remarkable numbers of dice early on to power it up, and then it just runs amok through my armies. I once had the displeasure of watching a fresh unit of 35 dreadspears led by a master with magic weapon fail it’s terror test when charged from 16 inches away by a black coach and then get run down. If I could absolutely purge one unit from any army book, it would probably be this one.

My pet peeve as a TK player is how the skeletons stack up and how Grave Guard are just that little bit better than Tomb Guard for the points (heavy vs light armor) that's one of the reasons I like the End Times legions of Undeath list... you can cherry pick what units work best and remove some of the handicaps TK armies got saddled with. I've taken to converting all of my VC to a more Faux Egyptian theme to make that list my preferred TK variant...Losing Settra and some of the other SC is a small price to pay.
