Lighting sucks. Once he's finished (hopefully tonight, although I have a bunch of projects around the house so probably tomorrow) I'll try and take a better pic. Gonna try and experiment with OSL on his weapon. I had a new airbrush arrive in the mail this weekend and I'm dying to try it out.
Skaven will also get primed tonight.

Man I've got a ton (120) of those exact same rats staring at me on my to-paint list. Will be watching to see how you go about tackling the beast. I had thought to cut out a layer of highlighting and just do base/wash/1 highlight.

nothing like some batch painting to cleanse the painting palate.
the scale shots with the skull crusher are helpful. thanks! I've been eyeing these knights (or rather exalted heroes on demonic steed) for a while now. just a bit out of my comfort range price-wise.

Man I've got a ton (120) of those exact same rats staring at me on my to-paint list. Will be watching to see how you go about tackling the beast. I had thought to cut out a layer of highlighting and just do base/wash/1 highlight. LOL I know the feeling! My friend sold me his skaven a few years ago when he left Alaska before he moved away. I just broke them out a couple weeks ago from their storage boxes and did a count and I have 370 clanrats/slaves! My friend texted me just a few days ago to let me know he found another box with another 150 slaves in it! I'm swimming in rats up here and it's incredibly daunting. I'm hoping that once I figure out this technique I can do somewhere between 40-60 rats a week. The plan: Mournfang Brown primer (or whatever they're calling it these days, while I no longer pay attention to GW colors I do love their primer and their inks) black wash drybrush the whole model with Vallejo Model Color German Camo light Brown paint the clothing either Vallejo Game Color Cayman Green or Vallejo Game Color Heavy Grey. Highlight with opposite color Drybrush fur with Vallejo Game Color Charred Brown Drybrush weapons/armor/face/tail/hands with Vallejo Game Color Heavy Warmgrey also will pick out eyes and teeth/claws with this color. Pigment wash some rust on the weapons and armor. Done. I actually found this technique by doing an internet search for skaven speed painting. I ended up finding this. I like his results so I'm going to give it a go, All I did was translate the colors into Vallejo, as those are the paints that I use and love. nothing like some batch painting to cleanse the painting palate. the scale shots with the skull crusher are helpful. thanks! I've been eyeing these knights (or rather exalted heroes on demonic steed) for a while now. just a bit out of my comfort range price-wise. Thanks! Yes I need to switch my brain off for a little bit and just batch paint for a while. I want the skaven to hit the tables sometime this year so now is a good time to start. We have rules for the Varanguard over on the expansion development forum. Essentially Chosen riding daemonic steeds. I'm hoping to get KevinC to rework them as right now knights and skullcrushers have more attacks in the same frontage that these guys do for less cost. A little underwhelming for the lieutenants of Archaon. Right now my plan is to just use them as heroes on Daemonic steeds as well.

That horseman is looking great! Stirland never gets any love! Lol! I think that has mostly to do with one of the main colors being yellow! lol. But seriously yellow is a pain. The fluff for my Beastmen puts them in Averland and Stirland so I figure my empire will be based out of there. This was more or less a test model for my empire painting scheme. Technically it'll be 3 schemes as I'll have the two provinces plus the Stirland river patrol scheme; I'm looking forward to painting up a uniformed army for once.

I really dig hearing the fluff that everyone has put together for their armies! Also kudos for the classic Empire vs Beastmen matchup

Look great. I hope I would never have to touch such a model or at least 2 weeks off the normal life for me.

HAHA yup. This took about 2.5 weeks to complete. I'm done with character models for the time being (let alone an entire unit of character-worthy models) and am going to focus on RnF. Gonna switch my brain off and just drybrush and ink to my hearts content.

Lets see the Varanguard model next to some rats!
Honestly your skaven speed painting sounds involved. A mate did something very similar but skipped all the highlights completely. Regiments still look good on the tabletop. He has since gone back and added a couple highlights on the occasional front rank model but thats it. Took him not much time at all.

Well I thought that brown paint + ink would be quick, but the ink portion, even though I ink the entire model still takes longer than I would prefer.
In around 4 hours worth of work I've managed though to work my way to the first block painted color for the clothing on 20 models. In my opinion that's too long. I'm probably going to either start priming black or SEVERELY lighten the color of my rats so that the brown primer actually shades the model well. Come to think of it I just might do this. Maybe I'll do a light brown/tan skin and then if I need darker I can ink where it needs to be darker.
The drybrushing steps take less than a minute per model (weapons, fur, armor NOT the overbrush first one; that takes a little while to get to show up, although I suspect is has more to do with working with brown primer instead of black)
Honestly though I need some kind of highlighting, I just cant stand looking at a model that doesn't have some form of it.
I'll figure out something that works for me!

Wow fantastic stuff. The model is so well done that I easily do the "gif" of the swing and follow through.

You could always start dipping them ink to speed things up. I always use black primer now, I used to use white but I much prefer the coverage over black
