The skeletons are coming along very nicely. Nice work with the bases. Thanks!!! The slow yet relentless necromantic work continues. I’ve finished blinging up bases for the 40 odd individual models. They look pretty dynamic with their mix of weapons and heights, as some of them are walking over blocks of stone or fallen branches. Makes me almost foget how goofy these 5th ed skellies are. Almost! Here’s a couple individual pics: A small unit filler with two palls having a stroll through the forest: With some creative basing and the spare models I have I will be able to stretch this to a mighty horde of 60 dudes. I’ve forgot to mention that the mix of weapons is calculated to allow splitting them into two units of 30 spearmen and hw&shield each. There are two command groups mixed in there for that purpose. I still have to add some forest ground cover to the bases to finish them off. Have some ideas but need to do a few more experiments. I’ve also started fleshing out the large unit fillers. I need to build some large tree trunks for those as I don’t feel there are enough ‘foresty’ accents yet in the unit. I am going for a pretty classic gothic vibe, trying to rock that Caspar David Friederich look if you get my drift: Most likely I will try scratch building them as I haven’t been able to locate any that I would like so far. Need to start twisting some wire. Speaking of artistic influences, I am pushing forward with a large 9 man filler using one of the old GW trees, inspired by John Blanche’s rather iconic image: Not going beat for beat as that tree would have to be 20” tall, but I hope this will look the part in a 60 man horde.

I love that pic. Definitely one that made me embrace the undead back in the day!

Thanks for the encouragement gents. Here's some progress on the unit fillers: I have fleshed out the big tree with some more details. I've also elongated the roots, to make it blend with the base better. I think I am happy with where it's at right now, just need to add some ground cover. The other unit filler was a bit of a struggle. I carved the resin base add on to fit the square base and tried making a tree. The first attempt looked like this: The trunk was made of a very dried out twig, covered up with some DAS modeling clay. I did not like the overal effect as the tree surface and shape was too smooth. Plus DAS isn't that great for making details. So I've bought some miliput and sculpted a new tree using a wire armature. Green stuff and some dryad branches were used to texture the bark. Took me ages but I did not have a chance to sculpt anything of that sort before - good learning experience I would say. Here's how it will look with some skeletons added. Still have one more filler I am working on (6 man stand in). More stuff soon.

Superb tubis.
Enjoyed the detailed post. The new tree with the wireframe is a big improvement. The citidel tree filler is really nice.

Happy new year everyone! My new year’s resolution is to get this army to a playable 1500 points this year….so exactly the same as last year ha-ha. At least it's easy to remember right? Watch me snail along as even with contrast paints I am a painfully slow painter. Anyways some things did get done since last year. First of all I’ve managed to get the last unit filler for the skeleton horde done: I went for a more gnarled tree with less branches this time, simply because it was a bit less intimidating to make and easier to rank up. More milliput this time and less green stuff, as I am getting more comfortable with it. Some resin bits on the base and a tombstone from the giant’s club, that I had as a leftover from my O&G. Here’s how it looks with the skeletons: I have also finished off the big tree with a dead body swinging in the branches and a skeleton axeman leaning against the trunk. I have some new found respect for people sculpting hands on miniatures - it’s tough work: As far as work on the painting front goes, I did manage to base and undercoat all of the skellies (A for effort no)? I did also manage to knock out a few test models: I need to work on the verdigris. It is much harder to get right than I thought it would be ('what do you mean I can’t just flood it with nihklah oxide?'). I am going to make the ruins look mostly like black marble. I think this creates a nice backdrop for the beige-white undead and looks pretty sinister. I will attempt to keep the effect simple or it will probably drive me mad. The dead leaves were made some time ago using a leaf cutter from green stuff world and some dyed coffee filters. They have a nice texture to them and are obviously more durable than real leaves, which are recommended to be used with this punch. They are a bit too thick for it though and it gets stuck constantly. First world problems!

Great progress! I especially like that you're really experimenting with various leaf cutting media!

Greetings! A little update from my progress on the undead. The skeleton regiment is slowly growing in size, up to 30 strong now: The contrasts are doing their job with the bony parts quite well but painting the wraithbone sprayed bases is an absolute pain in the ass. I have to seal all of the blacks with brush-on varnish as the paint just wipes off everytime I touch it. No ide why. Tried vallejo and army painter but they don't hold to the primer very well. Still tinkering around with the verdigris, I am very slowly getting the hang of it I think. Progress is progress though and I am not going to complain, march on my minions! Here is the first of the old school command groups, in perhaps not the most flattering light (I will take a more decent photoshoot when the full 60 is done). Two of the unit fillers have been completed as well: I must say I am having the most fun with these. Two more are on their way. I will be deffinietly doing more of these for my zombies and grave guard. To not go crazy from paitning skeletons I have also converted my first Liche: Okay converted is too big of a word. He's a slightly modified Reaper miniature Ashkrypt (if I remember correctly, he's been in the pile for a while). I have replaced his silly looking oversized scythe with a more proper magical staff. He was going to be my general, but then I have managed to snatch up the ultimate Barrow King's leader from a Polish collector: I have spent a lot of time looking for Arkhan and I am very happy to finally have him in my posession. I will be deffinietly paitning the Reaper liche first so he will have his time in the spotlight as a master necromancer before being most likely demoted.
