It might not be in the first wave - that will hopefully be the "old guard" - but I fully expect a Cathay expansion not too long after the initial release of TOW. I'm fully in support of this if only because it might lead to some proper hung models. I want my chaos mongols god dammit! I hear the Slaaneshi ones are going to be particularly well hung.

Since Kislev & Cathay are both seeming to be featured fleshed out armies in the new game, I am wondering if the way GW may do it is do basic get you by lists for all the old armies at the start similar to BB, Necromunda & the big reboots in the main line games.
Then release campaign books centred around a certain area that includes more detailed army rules for a handful of armies at a time.

That's about what I'd expect. Small to medium sized 'seasons' with a theme that focuses on a couple of armies at a time such as an Empire civil war and a greenskin Waagh! tearing its way through dwarven holds and skaven-filled caverns.

I would much prefer it, campaign books that expand on three or four armies at a time in a unique way instead of big army books for every faction which for me is an off putting concept currently.
At this stage in my life I get no real enjoyment from games decided on who has the best memory for a hundred different rules or gotchas, would much prefer minimalised/shared special rules with a focus on the game being tactical on the battlefield rather then in the list building stage.

Yep. The images for TOW and WHTW3 are nearly identical. It just makes sense. Why do something twice, when you can just do it once?
And a BIG plus, they mentioned right at the end, to be on the lookout for more from Bretonnia, Kislev, and (THE DIVIDED) EMPIRE. 💥💥💥💥
OMG, I'm so happy.

To put not too fine a point on it: as I said 6 years ago, GW really dropped the ball not using the release of WHTW1 to push WFB, rather than scuttling it.

They have already sold me on a Cathay army and the models probably won't see release for at least another two years, exciting to see something completely new.

The popularity of WHTW1 completely caught GW off guard. As you say, it would have been the perfect vehicle to revitalize interest in Warhammer Fantasy. But they had already committed to a full court press with Age of Sigmar. And they thought keeping Warhammer Fantasy around wouldn't work -- even though they are not really comparable games.

Well It would have been if they would have known long before. People forget how long release cycles are. There are years in production before we see a release.
I would guess most of 2022 is already planned and some of 2023 already.
Covid and shipping and staff working from home made a huge dent and I guess the rapid releases we see know is a result of that pipeline on full throttle. 🤩

I wonder if them having created Cathay rules for 8th suggests that ToW game will be similar to what 9th edition would have been had we not got Sigmarines, rather then a complete rebuild from the ground up as they have suggested in the past.
