Hello everyone! It's good to be back and see you're still going. I was especially moved to discover that my old Army of the Eight Peaks paintlog has been bumped less than a year ago. Over the past few years I've mostly dabbled with smaller projects such as Blood Bowl and Titanicus and added to my 40k armies, but I've really missed having a big army project on square bases, so when the family got together during the summer we decided to resurrect the old family tradition of a large 2v2 game next year (probably in April or May). Everyone was keen, but only I was keen enough to sign up for a brand new army. I realised we had never had any undead in any of the previous battles, so we decided to play an undead coalition against some 'last alliance of elves and men' kind of thing (looks like it will mostly be Empire and maybe High Elves). We already have some Tomb Kings and Vampire Counts in the group, but to tie it all together and make the game really epic we decided on having The Great Necromancer himself lead the undead. I had been eyeing the new Ossiarchs for AoS and decided to use the new aesthetic to represent the army of Nagashizzar, Nagash's personal force. Over the last month I've been buying a few lots on Tradera (local eBay) and started working. I've decided on a colour scheme and started on the Skeletons. Using the Legion of Nagash gives me a lot of creative liberty to use both Tomb Kings and Vampire Counts rules to represent the new models. Morteks will be Skeletons, the cavalry will be Black Knights, the Crawler will be a Screaming Skull Catapult and so on. Ideas for other fitting ways to use AoS models are welcome. Anyway, good to be back here and really exciting to have a Warhammer Fantasy army project going again. It's been five years.

Thank you for the welcome. Here's the first batch of skellies. I plan to start with a unit of 60, the backbone (!) of the army. I really like how menacing these skeletons look when ranked up on proper bases. And who can resist a forest of long spears? Still undecided on the bases. Usually I do grass, because that's what I have on my table. But now I'm thinking maybe snow instead? I never did snow.

This is a most interesting idea - while I'm not keen on their messed-up Joker faces, the rest of the concept and aesthetic of the Ossiarch is quite interesting and original (in my personal view far more so than Vampire Counts) and the Mortek Guard look quite good on 20mm squares. My only concern is that they look too bulky and strong to be given such a weak profile as regular Skeletons, and that they'd have a profile more like Tomb Guard, but of course you have to have Core troops and they're the only unit that can really fit the bill.
I'll be interested to see how this army progresses. I take it you'd use some of those Necropolis Stalkers as Ushabti?

Yes, they do look a bit stronger than regular skeletons but it's not a huge difference and they don't look overly powerful compared to the troops of other races with similar stats. Precisely for the reason you mention, Tomb/Grave Guard are out of the question anyway, bulking out the Core is an issue for the Undead. Yes, I do have a bunch of Stalkers. I'm doing them with shields for aesthetic reasons. While Ushabti can't take them, they do have a 5+ save so that's good enough (light armour and shield). Really good models too.

Hard to get by those faces. But a stellar paint job with muted colors helps a lot! Neat how they fit on 20mm. I could see them as tomb guard in my army one day. I really like the idea of the Nagashizzar core with this aesthetic in a larger Undead Legion.
edit: and in terms of bases. I would rate consistency over the entire army and how it fits with your gaming table higher than the cool looks of snow or jungle when the miniature sits in a display case. But it's all about priorities.

Seems like people have a problem with the Mortek faces. Never had a problem with them myself.
I've run into a small problem; Ossiarchs don't seem to be into music much. There are no musicians in any of the kits as far as I can see. I will have to get the bits for that elsewhere.

Seems like people have a problem with the Mortek faces. Never had a problem with them myself. No worries, I think it's just all down to personal taste. I just can't seem to help thinking it was a flaw in GW's sculpting, and that they were trying to get the 'rictus grin' that you see on the regular Skeletons, but it just happened to turn out wrong and resulted in grins more like that of the Joker. Certainly I personally would have preferred to see all the models have the mouthless Necron-style faces that do exist on the Mortisan Soulreaper and Kainan the Mortisan Executioner from the Underworlds warband. I think those look so much better and personally I think it was a shame this was never realised on all the models (though actually I could in a way fulfil this by putting Necron heads on Ossiarch models and painting the face metal and the cranium bone, to look like they're wearing metal face masks). But I still think it's great that you're so enthusiastic about the Ossiarch and are bringing them into Fantasy. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the haul you bought turns out! I've run into a small problem; Ossiarchs don't seem to be into music much. There are no musicians in any of the kits as far as I can see. I will have to get the bits for that elsewhere. I think it's an AoS thing, musicians have much less of an impact in that game than they do in Fantasy so they're showing up less and less in the new kits. Spare Tomb King horns may be the answer here, in particular those that come with the Warriors because the massive hands of the old 6th Edition Skeletons would most likely fit quite well on the Ossiarch.

First finished unit turned out to be Ushabti. Not sure if I'll field them exactly like this, but at least for now I'm planning to run two units of six. Also chipping away at the skellies. I'm at 40/60. I noticed I'm low on movement trays. I had an old stash of the brilliant modular movement trays, but it turns out I have very few left. Where do your guys source yours these days?

I recommend Litko movement trays. They have just about every size you could ever need. And the wood material feels much nicer then plastic trays. Prices are reasonable too.

The Phalanx Eternal stands ready to do the will of the Great Necromancer. It feels good to have the biggest unit of the army done already. thegoat: I'll check them out, thanks.

I'm a huge fan of these models, I don't understand why so many don't like them. Perfect for a Nagash based army.

The Phalanx Eternal is amazing and now the best example of the Ossirach Bonereapers in Fantasy that I have seen.
Great colour scheme, especially like the banner, and the unit comes together so nicely.
