I wonder how the Cathayans are explained to do battle in the Old World, as in actually get there. I hope it is not giant sky barges of DOOM or magic portals of celestial dragon magic. Maybe 200 years ago they were still sending out something like Treasure Fleets of Ming China (on steroids of course because warhammer)?

I am sticking to my prediction that instead of army books we will get detailed campaign books that focus on a certain region & a few armies, for example: Book one - Cathay/Hobgoblins/Tzeentch Chaos Book two - Kislev/Empire/Another Chaos God Book three - Bretonnians/Wood Elves/Greenskins As long as they release get you by army rules for all the classic armies, I would much prefer this system to individual army books.

In case it was missed: "Cathay will also be coming to the tabletop in the upcoming Warhammer: The Old World."----------GW actually wrote a Grand Cathay book for 8th edition. I was hoping they might release that as a teaser for total war / preview of things to come. If anyone reading this has a copy, I'd pay a large sum of money for it, PM me. Thanks.

I would not mind that, the reason I am anti army books is because I just don't want them to be like 40k has become, hundreds of unique rules that turn the game in to a deck building contest. I like games where list building only has maybe 20% effect on the winner and the battle is decided by smart play on the table, I just don't have any trust in GW being able to resist smothering new armies in special rules if they stick to the traditional army book system.

I agree 100% 40K is like that because they feel the need to continuously release new models. New models sell. And new models need new rules. So the rules just keep expanding and expanding. Hopefully with The Old World, when GW re-releases the classic factions it will be new enough that they wont resort to CCG style bloat to drive sales.

So maybe I am just bad at english but from that interview I never heard it as that. From what I got out of if and my interpretation was that when they kicked off the Old World and total war 3 they made an new army book for cathey based of 8ed as a starting point. And they never said anything about the condition of the “book”. It might as well be printed word document. Still awesome and of course something needed at EEFL. 😛 The person doing the interview never did any good follow up question when he found out there was a book in front of the designer.

While I am sure their innate greed would love this, the only way I can see them producing that many book for ToW is if it is replacing AoS as the core fantasy game, which is not going to happen even if it would be humorous.

I would be very surprised if The Old World doesn't get individual army books for each faction/race. Every faction getting its own book has been the GW way for thirty years. Even the new Necromunda has a ~128 page book for each gang. And that is to support only a handful of model kits. That said I could see them combining some factions. For instance will we get books for both Vampire Counts and Tomb Kings? or a single Undead book? Same question for Warriors/Beasts/Daemons of Chaos.

It is not how the Horus Heresy works though which I believe is a better guide to how ToW will work.

I agree, I assume the Cathay "book" is not a retail ready physical product. Likely much closer to a word document, like you say. I'd still like to read it. Though I'm not offering a large sum of money like KevinC.
