Troll WiP pictures. I managed to get my hands on 17 vanilla Trolls in total, 10 metals and 7 BfSP. I decided to make units of 10 and 6 and leave the last one to run single. I started with the big unit. Just getting this far has taken a lot of time -- filing, drilling, sawing and assembling. I used mostly Ogre bits to rebuild. I had only three basic models to work with and the BfSP one has a 'weapon' you don't really want more than one of in the same unit. As you can see in these two pictures I have a lot of greenstuff work ahead of me. This could be the most ambitious sculpting project I've done so far. My Nurgle Daemons had some heavy stuff too, but that was on individual models and not units. I'm even going to try sculpting a head or two, but I have some I could use if I'm not happy with the result.

I'm lovin' it! This is a great start at employing a lot of variety with not many options at your disposal! I'm pretty sure I have several bits from my 6 River Trolls sets that I could send to you to use if you want them. I didn't use any of the vomit (it just turned my stomach every time I looked at it) in my Trolls. I could give you those if you want them.

Cheers mottdon but I have found the River Troll bits are so much bigger than the vanilla Trolls that they're just not compatible (and I have my own six sets of those).

Thanks Mottdon I do appreciate it. I was asked for tutorials on another forum so you get some too whether you like it or not! More WiPs. I'm going to explain my methods a bit more here for anyone interested. I don't presume to be a particularly good sculptor but I've learned a few things over the years. Arm sculpts. One very important point here is that I didn't do these two arms in one session. If I did, I would certainly have ruined the first arm by putting my finger on it while working on the second. Unless you're much faster than me you'll be working on a single arm like this for 20 minutes minimum. Sooner or later you'll make that mistake. For arms specifically, I find it helps a lot to look at other arms or your own arms to get the anatomy right. The first of the headless Trolls. So far I have sculpted the shoulder and worked out the basic shape of the chest. Again, I did this in two sessions. As soon as you're happy with a detail, let it cure. Don't be tempted to do one more thing on that model. The second headless Troll. I started by filling out the chest cavity and sculpting the belly. Next step will be the upper chest like on the other Troll. Also note that I've filled the shoulder joint to strengthen it as this will make it easier to sculpt the details later. One more tip: keep your tool wet and work with a light touch. If you want to move something a few mm, push it very gently and repeatedly so the change comes gradually. Don't carve or force. The same applies to smoothing the surface -- repeated light touches with a wet tool. Your finger can be useful too to smooth out joints, just be careful so you don't get fingerprints on the model.

Finally I have another unit finished. This time a more normal-sized mob of spear goblins. All mobs can't be gigamobs. Top view of the unit filler. The next update won't take me nearly as long as I'm 90% done with a similar but slightly smaller unit, and after that I just need to finish my Trolls to have another 100 models finished, and that means I get to put them all on the table for another army shot. Maybe even before the new year.

What happened to the Slayer in the unit filler? Is the poor bloke netted?

He's netted, bound, taunted, poked and trolled.

Here's the first half of the Troll unit. Mostly it's the Trolls with the least conversion work on them, with the exception of the guy on the right. He's got sculpted arms, an all new trollish nose and quite a bit of work to make the head fit. Slightly different angle. I'm a little concerned that they may not fit in too well in the paint scheme in this army, but then again there are the Squigs that are also predominantly red so maybe it'll work out. You can judge for yourself as soon as I finish one more Night Goblin unit and the rest of the Trolls, because then it will be time for another army shot as I reach 500 models.

Oh man I love these trolls and I think the color scheme is perfect. The fact that you sculpted arms and stuff...I can't tell looking at the painted pics. They look awesome. I love trolls!

Huge fan of the skin tone! Is it a red... a brown...? the shades are nice and subtle.
(this sounds weird coming from me, as my own posted pictures aren't the best resolution, but...) Could you post a cleaner brighter well-lit hi-res photo so I can drool over the color scheme some more.

Wow! They look awesome! I love the effort you've put into them so that they don't all look the same.

The army is amazing. Love the Gigamob and Skarsnik's even bigger horde!
You have done a great job painting the Forgeworld models. I like that you have used the FW shaman for Duffskull.
Everything looks so fantastic together.
Your Karak Eight Peaks battle is going to be an EPIC!
