Welcome goldengoblinI'm curious what made you and your friends choose 8E over prior editions? My friend Dwayne, who is a longtime fantasy player, played a ton of fantasy and said it’s one of his favorite rule sets. We also are talking about dabbling in 6th and 3rd. The existence of this forum helped inform starting out and mostly focusing on 8th edition(pre-end times) as well. Being relatively new to 8th, I played one game and was hooked. Especially like the cleaned up movement mechanics and random charges. As far as allowing pre-measuring, I could go either way—given my advantage being in the building trades. Also talking about using army books from other editions in various editions. Kind of an a la carte way of playing.

I am more of a 6th Ed player really, forced to play 8th due to what the locals play.. (But i like some things, random winds of magic for example). 6th Ed had a better feel for.. To me. The black & white grimdark art. And it was baalnced.. 8th Ed suffers from too much high fantasy and massive power creep.. So I like that too, playing various editions..
I know some people play 6th Ed with 7th Ed army books - or was it the other way around (not a huge fan of 7th Ed actually, then i prefer 8th ED!)

A player who understands the game can't lose with Vampire Counts. A lot of options to build combat avoidance armies, etc. If you play with gentleman fine, but a power gamer or hardcore tournament player will design abusive armies.

G'day all,
Last played 8th about a decade ago, now the scene is starting up again in a nearby town so hopefully I'll be playing again soon. Had been trying a bit of One Page Rules fantasy with a friend using my lizardmen and skaven, and OPR is just fine for getting minis on tables and dice rolling. It's funny how oldschool these boards look, compared to the more modernised dakka or lustria online where I lurk.
Cheers!
