Right the time has come to commit to paper (as such) the start of the epic ballad of Marc le Chauve. To help facilitate some further inspiration for paint schemes (to supplement the heraldry banners from Tewksbury posted here) I rifled through my old WD collection and found a couple of great articles. The first hailed back to the oldhammer age and WD 136, when I believe the (uncredited) Perry Twins wrote an article on Bretonnian heraldry, including colour schemes, how to link lineage etc. The next article actually spread over 3 WD issues but the below is from the 2nd one extract from WD220. In it the Nigel Stillman talks about building a fluffy army but what I liked is the painting of his knights errant in the same colours but all with different heraldry. To be honest I enjoyed flicking through the older WD's so much I thought i'd just share them So I'm still awaiting my order of 2 Trebuchets and 10 Questing Knights to arrive from Norba Miniatures (seriously their delivery times are less than impressive) but I have dug out my old 5th edition starter box models (22 archers and 12 KoTR) and picked up a substantial haul of knights for a bargain from a club member including 18 knights (9 pre-painted) and 6 Grail Knights. Add to this a pre-painted BSB and Damsel (both to be touched up) I picked up on ebay and an unopened mounted and 'on-foot' damsel and I almost have a battle ready force. I really just need to pick up some Peg riders (although I did get 4 in a bargain on ebay, they went astray in the post, highly frustrating as I know they were sent, as I was tracking them. Still the guy did refund me with no hassle).

Do you need more knights and archers? I have a starter set from 6ed used as models for my kids as I have no plan on collecting them for years.

Damn! I gotta say, as someone who is also upgrading a collection of Bretonians (From AoS to 8th ed) it is nice to know someone else shares my pain when it comes to this I gotta ask though, how is Norba Miniatures? Have you used them before? I really like the look of the models on their website, but I hesitate to buy from an 'unknown' mini dealer. Also I suggest Veni Vidi Vici transfers if you need some, they are pretty awesome! Plus they are damn cheap!

Thanks strutsagget but I will probably not take you up on that offer as I doubt i'll ever use more archers than I already own and the knights I have will keep me going for a while! alanthemoderate - I haven't used Norba before but had heard quite good things about them. mottdon recently bought some stuff off them and it's in his Empire thread. There delivery time isn't as swift as I would like. Mottdon's took about a month and a half from order to him receiving them (the company is in Spain he is in the States) and my order has taken over a month so far and i'm only in the UK.

Awesome to hear! I just got the guy to sell me the rest of his army, but to bring down the price we decided that he would try to sell the Peg knights, and Bowmen seperately

How do you people play bretonia with no good rulebook? Any homemade books good enough? What's wrong with the Bretonia rulebook? It seems fine to me, I mean I have yet to actually play a game with them, but it seems cool enough.

The Bretonnians work... sort of.
They can do well if you get a combo-charge off with several units of knights, or pin a target unit down with a big tarpit of Men-At-Arms and counter-charge with knights. And the combat characters are about the hardest in the game - only hardcore combat vampires and WOC characters are more powerful.
The down side is, everything in the book is overpriced for what you get. It's no coincidence that several tournament comp systems gave Bretonnia extra points... and they still didn't exactly dominate the tournament rankings.
Highly experienced Bretonnian generals are very dangerous with the army. That speaks more to their tactical skill, than to the strength of the army. Indeed, no few use Bretonnia for the challenge, rather than use more dangerous updated armies.

The book is from the 6ed right. Has to be a lot of errata to get it working?

The book is from the 6ed right. Has to be a lot of errata to get it working? Correct, it is from 6th edition. It doesn't really require a lot of errata to get working, the issue (besides points costs of units) is the lack of options in all the segments (core, special, rare) compared with other army books released in later editions. Someone could certainly still have a lot of fun with it, but after multiple games the lack of options in the army list become more apparent. 1 Warmachine only, no monstrous cavalry, no unridden monsters, limited special characters etc.

I don't know. The Empire (the other human army) doesn't have any unridden monsters either. And I've always looked at Pegasus's as being their Monstrous Cavalry option. And they fly! Yes, they do lack in the War Machine department, but their Trebuchets are amazing at what they do. That, plus the fact that they are a very fast army, gels rather well. If you give Bret's Cannons, then there really isn't many differences between them and the Empire.
And as far as core options go, getting an 8th edition book doesn't mean that'd get any better. Look at Ogre Kingdoms. They only have 3 Core options. And two of those are basically choices between Shields and Great Weapons. Not much for them. Bret's would also lose tons of magical items. The one really good thing about an updated book (IMO) would be getting a few new units to add to the roster as well as some updated models.
