5Aug2017 It seemed high time to start a proper hobby log as I dive deeper into the army of bearded angriness (or is it angry beardedness?). This project started out with a friend forcing his unloved (and unpainted) dwarf army upon me when he moved. Life lesson: have the right friends and your hobby will thrive. There is a companion thread here ( eefl.freeforums.net/thread/545/dwarfs-future ) where friendly and knowledgeable people try their best to teach me how to play with dwarfs. Will they succeed? TBD On the hobby side, I am actually rather opinioned when it comes to dwarfs as I don’t like quite a few of the models. For me there is a ~10year sweet spot after dwarf hands became a lot smaller than their heads but before they picked up the giant pauldrons of their last iteration before the End Times. I also find this ‘no wood’ (not to mention ‘no wheel’) idea silly which affects my preferences for war machine models. Having said that, I will bend my own rules if somebody shoves free models in my face so any and all dwarf model may show up here. So there you have it, enough waffling. Let’s do some pictures, army background can wait. Here is the high command as it currently stands. The BSB obviously kitbashed out of a BfSP model and thin air, a proper one is high on my want list. Next up warriors, currently promoted to Longbeards to fill out the core requirements. This is a mix of different generations of plastics, hamfists have to stay in the back rank though. ..and to finish up the unit a trusty old pony carrying the bare necessities (and some scrap metal). On the shooty side (which I will TRY not to overdo) I have thunderers and quarrellers/rangers. I leave it at that for now but, stay tuned.

Awesome units by you as always. Great use of all generations of plastics. Thanks. Incidentally, my favorite plastics (the still current non-elite guys) aren't in yet. I've acquired a box recently though. Those look nice! Now I see where the green in the copters come from! If those were yourse Well, green isn't a terribly original color for dwarfs. In fact at some point the GW 'factory paint job' for gyrocopters was green, so as the riflemen say "There are many like it, but this one is mine." I really like this version of the gyrocopter. It looks more like it could fly compared to what came before and after. And, game-wise I am rather excited to have this thing zip around at full speed causing mischief (this may be because I haven't played a game yet...). The other dwarf unit that on paper seems rather interesting to me are miners. These are a mix of 'proper' ones and a few of the BfSP variety. I tried to have them be more earthy and functional compared to the other guys. One thing I can't figure out painting-wise is what to do about the front of the horn. How do I make that more convincing? The champion on the left is lugging around the bulky (yet essential) steam drill. Still haven't figured out what to do about the banner, I guess it'll have to be made out of paper, sweat and tears but I am balking a bit. I am rather fond of the banner bearers nose, he clearly downs a couple pints of Bugman's XXX each night after a hard day in the mines. Lastly, my first and only war machine, just a little BfSP cannon with an extra master engineer. Don't worry guys, he's got this! So, this is what I have painted so far. Currently working on some hammerers, will post some WIP when I get a chance.

Dang, Naitsabes, those look AMAZING! Great work! You're making me want to go re-touch a lot of my Dwarfs! I look at your stuff and it just gives me so many ideas! Great inspiration!
A couple of things:
1. I LOVE your Miner's Standard Bearer! That guy looks awesome! The nose is great, but those bushy eyebrows! I think that's what makes the model for me! You can't even see his eyes they are so bushy. As for the banner, I've often wondered how Miners in a tight tunnel see a banner up at the front. It'd probably have to have lots of candles, or glowing runes for them to follow. Maybe that'll give you some ideas?
2. The Miner's Musician's horn. Maybe you can drill out the front a bit (carefully!) and then use the same gold color to base and then do light layers of washes of brown, leading progressively to black wash at the very center, giving a degrading perspective to infinity. (I hope that makes sense.)
3. I love that you put the Steam Drill on the Champ's back. Looking at it, I'm wishing that I had done that! Lol! So very thematic!
4. Great job on the Gyrocopter too! I actually prefer the newer Gyro's, even though I have two of both versions. I think that I can't get past the cockpit of this older one. It looks like a big intertube to me. I can't decide if he's going to be flying through the sky or floating down the river! (It can be argued that the new model looks like a flying fish though!) Lol! I jest.
5. Your bases are phenominal. Where do you get your rocks from? I have a hard time locating a good, reliable option for that. I use the Gale Force 9 turf cover, but it's all so symmetrical as far as size goes. Yours look perfect though. Very convincing that it's actual rocky ground.
6. You cannon (and crew) is great! It's really hard not to simply paint the entire thing a metal color and leave it at that. Great job incorporating other colors. And I love that crewman that's holding the beer mug! Lol, "Sure I have a job to do, but don't ask me to stop drinking!" So Dwarfy!

Thanks for the praise, mottdon, glad I helped spread the 'dwarf fever'. 2. The Miner's Musician's horn. Maybe you can drill out the front a bit (carefully!) and then use the same gold color to base and then do light layers of washes of brown, leading progressively to black wash at the very center, giving a degrading perspective to infinity. (I hope that makes sense.) that sounds elaborate...yet doable, if I can find the right power tool. I will give it a try with a spare horn first. well, I know which gyro I want to sit in if there is a water landing. I guess that flimsiness (i.e. resemblance to early planes made from thin wooden frame and paper) makes the model slightly more believable to me. I actually can live with the gyrobomber version of that kit, it doesn't look quite as chubby, just would need to figure out a way to put on bigger rotor blades. some day... Right, so the secret ingredient is....sand from your local playground. Look around a bit, you want the coarser stuff. Then a good rinse-soak-rinse in water because I've seen firsthand what kids and dogs, big and small do to that sand. The local sand does have some bigger bits in it but, not enough so I add in a bit of 'Army Painter Rock Base'. I think that is basically small cork bits. You've nailed the key point though, varying grain size.

Here is what I am currently working on. Gamezone not-hammerers. To the metrically challenged among you: this is over a pound of dwarfiness.

Very nice work, all looking fantastic. I was considering getting those gamezone hammerers, they are really nice models, but in the end I opted for the marauder old school ones. Regarding the horn, I would probably just try and paint some perspective into it. That is A LOT of metal to drill out. Also I think you should paint a banner for your miners

Your dwarfs are an inspiration! If I wasn't so involved right now with the rightful under-empire (skaven) I'd seriously consider coming back to mine and painting some more.
You're also making me seriously consider green instead of blue on my dwarfs...maybe both.

As far as the horn goes, do you have a Dremel tool? You can get a head adapter that is basically a conical sanding tool. That would hallow it out nicely and not take very long. I'd just drill a pilot hole to act as a guide for the bit and then let it do it's job! I might actually give it a try and see if it works. (Right now I just have it painted solid metal.)
And for the sand, that sounds good too! I can easily go find some. What is your process? I typically just use normal PVC glue, spreading it out on the base, sprinkling the turf on and letting it dry like that. After a day or so of drying, I then paint it up. I hate basing.

alright guys! yes, everyone should work on their dwarfs and reclaim the old holds from the baddies. Dwarfs have suffered for too long. Happy I help inspire this resurgence. Let's clear that Book of Grudges.
The miner's horn is plastic and I do have an off-brand dremel so drilling out SHOULD work. Still, sticking that power tool into a finished miniature is going to require some courage. I don't think I can get it much better with just paint though, beyond my skill level.
ryrak, blue-white is the super-classic dwarf color scheme. what's the guys name again? there is some oldhammer army that people are in love with (and have been for ~30 yrs). I guess I am saying stay the course. I was debating between green and blue as well. I don't think they would look good together though.
mottdon, here is how I go about it: before priming I spread a thin-ish layer of white glue on the base, then dunk the miniature into the sand/cork mix and apply some pressure to make sure the sand really sticks. then let dry for ~hrs. when painting I do the base first because the heavy dry brushing involved tends to go all over the model as well. After completely painting the miniature I add little blobs of white glue to the base using a toothpick and then sprinkle on static grass.

Gotcha. That's pretty much what I do as well, but I typically attach my model and paint it before I do the base. I don't usually have any trouble with the drybrushing of the base getting on the painted model, and if I do (and I care), I just touch it up a bit.
I'm going to see if I can dig out my Dremel stuff tonight and give that Miner musician a try. I'll take pics.

If I get paint on the model when I paint the base I usually just place a tuft/static grass to hide it.
I don't like going back and painting something I've already done.
With my Dark Elves I'm going to try painting model and base separately. But I also intend to do resin scenic bases for them as well.
