wilsonthenarc I have never tried pewter in a green stuff mould and doubt I ever will, it sounds entirely too dangerous for me. As for pressing the pieces I simply used my thumb first, and then the rounded bottom of my pin vice. Using some oil in the mould let's you push the gs much harder than you otherwise would as it has no chance of sticking. So, update for today. First I got a full set of shield casts painted up: The detail on them is fairly good, some are a little softer than I'd like and there was a little bit of slippage in a couple of them, but overall I'm very satisfied. Here's yesterday's warrior with a brand new shield: Then I did today's miniature, the standard bearer of the unit: He's not 100% finished as I'll still go back to the banner itself and do some highlights once it's fully dry. The banner itself is paper, I got it into the shape it's in by applying a wash to it (purple, if you couldn't tell), bending it over, and holding it there until it dried. Oh, and before I forget, here's 2 castings of the shields, all trimmed up:

grandmasterwang Thanks, I love them myself, I've got 50'ish scattered through my various chaos forces and I'm always looking for more. For an update today I am once again skipping the Beastmen, though I promise I'll return to them soon, they have to be finished before DaBoyz after all. So here I've got 10 chosen: They are usually played as having a mark of Khorne, hence the red, and are known as the Crimson Reapers. They belong to this unit: And this swells the Crimson Reapers to 50 painted figures, actually my largest painted infantry unit. They are all converted from the first multi-part plastic Chaos Warriors (the old hunchbacks), with new heads/arms/bits and a bit of sculpting to tie them all together. I've actually finished building another 25 of these guys though it'll be a while before they see a brush. The unit usually ends up getting fielded as warriors because there just aren't too many games to use 50 Khorne chosen in. As a final not, they will get a new banner soon, the one they're using is from when the unit was 10 strong.

This unit is fearsome! I would be sweating bullets if you put down a unit of 50 choosen during a battle.

Radio silence for a couple of days but I thought I'd dash off a quick update. I've been doing work mostly on a commission the last several days hence the lack of updates. I did find time for some work of my own and used it to work on the next 25 Chosen for the above regiment but they're not yet finished our photographed. Tonight I took a break from both commissions and a giant blob of infantry to work on a single technique on a single character model. The technique is to start with a black basecoat then highlight the miniature up through grey to white. Then with these having laid out your lights and shadows paint the miniature with washes and glazes. This is the figure highlighted up through white and with the first glaze of steel on the sword: And this is where I got to at the end of the night: The colors on him so far are all 2 thin glazes of color over the entire color area, relying solely on the grey and white layers for highlights. I did pick out a few details traditionally like the eyes and rivets on the hilt of the sword. The scars are a simple red wash over the skin and i used a little bit of flesh wash on certain areas of the face to bring it a little more life. I am happy with the technique so far and interested to see what the figure looks like with all his colors. I do assume that I'll do a final pass to put some traditional highlights on at the very end, but we'll see. If I find that I like this technique in going to have to get some glaze medium, water can only take you so far with glazes.

I am not nearly as skilled a painter as you, but this seems interesting enough for me to give it the ol' college try this week. Shades of gray, then color. I'll try it!

Chosen unit is immense.
Loving the Darkoath Chieftain so far.... funnily enough that's what i'm painting at the moment. It's a characterful mini.
Yours is looking really good so far.

I love his eyes and the smirk on his face. Does the model have a smirk like that, or did you paint it like that? Either way, totally awesome.

frozenfood Thanks, the gems were dead easy, highlighted up to white life everything else then put a single layer of colored ink on them and once that was dry a single coat of gloss varnish. KevinC The smirk is part of the sculpt, I'm not quite good enough to add those kinds of expressions, but, I did put an extra layer of flesh wash over the area to make it pop. Today's update is that I've finished the last 25 chosen. Here they are: And then we've got shots of each rank of five: These last five are the most mutated of the bunch, I quite like them. Some Chosen prefer bigger great weapons than other people do... And finally we've got an image of the full unit: It's truly a massive thing and I'm quite happy with it. 75 fully converted infantry on 25 mm bases, this unit has been in production for a long time. Now, note, the banner still needs to be redone as it's just a simple plastic flag right now. Second note, this unit could be better painted, it does not have lots of extra layers, washes, or blends, I just couldn't face them with a unit this size. But, all that being said, I love the unit. Welcome to the Crimson Reapers.
